Faith in Action: Testimonies from the Lulwanda Children’s Home Fellowship Dinner

Recently several members of the extended St. John’s community came together in fellowship and heard the stories of how God is at work at the Lulwanda Children’s Home, an orphanage and school serving AIDS orphans in Uganda. St. John’s supports the Lulwanda ministry, and individual members sponsor Lulwanda orphans and have served at the orphanage on mission trips.

Here’s what spoke to our faith community ...

The joy of the people involved as God has worked in miraculous ways. We just don’t step out in that kind of faith ... Libby

The sense of love and commitment in the room was so overwhelming (in a good way). Seeing Libby and Faith (child Libby sponsors) together was priceless! During the function all I could say was “Thank You God” for bringing such loving and caring folks to my country. Saturday renewed the commitment Michael and I made to the orphans and I felt so blessed to see what my church family is doing in Lulwanda. Thank you so much!!! ... Felicity

It is a rare treasure to see pure joy in someone's face, and I saw it last night at the dinner for the Lulwanda Children's Home. I was touched by the personal stories of the children of Lulwanda, including especially Faith Grace and John. All the children spoke from their hearts in the video, holding nothing back and not fighting their tears. In contrast the pure joy in their singing and dancing was truly an inspiration. I was also extremely surprised and impressed by their exuberant gratefulness to God for all their blessings, even the simplest ones ... Elaine

This is God's work - not ours. But, I am pleased that St. John's is/was able to play a small role. I loved watching Libby and Faith Grace enjoy the moment: pure love! The testimony of the sponsor couple who began sponsoring a child because their daughter wanted a sister. It started out as a financial commitment. God has grown their hearts over the years to love their sponsor child as one of their biological children. They have made two trips to Uganda to meet her, play with her, and discover that she is praying for their family every night ... Brad

It was so wonderful to see the numbers of people who are responding to such a huge need for these children and becoming the "hands and feet" for God here on earth. And to see what Lulwanda has meant for the two children, Faith and John, who came to the dinner this year from Lulwanda. What a contrast to the condition of the children John and I saw along the road in Uganda when we drove the four hours from the airport in Kampala to the Lulwanda home a few years ago. What spoke to me was the immensity of the need with a mind boggling 2 million orphans in Uganda. Also how well this ministry is providing for over 100 orphans. The children's stories in the videos were moving and the Board was impressive ... Jon

I could not help but think about the children that are still in the streets not only in Uganda, but even here in America, in Haiti and around the world, and I thought of Matthew 9:36-38 .... therefore pray that the Lord of the harvest will send laborers into His harvest.
To meet Faith Grace and John in person was a real treat/joy, and the genuineness and commitment of the people actively involved in the program (the caregivers, the board, the sponsors, the hearts that are transformed and engaged...) only deepens my faith, and encourages me to persevere in seeking first the Kingdom of God... I was moved by the stories of the children.... It hurt me and broke my heart to imagine over 2 million children without parents; without caregivers, without a kiss goodnight, children who don’t get their teeth brushed or a book read to them, children who don’t get a kiss when they are hurt, or to be held when they are sick... I imagined my own children and what they would do without us, the deep loneliness, the fear, the absolute confusion and loss...
I also imagined what it would be like to be a sick mother, to know I was dying, to know that when that day came, my children would have no one and to know there was nothing I could do about it. I always return from my trips to the Lulwanda Children’s Home in Uganda certain that I have just witnessed God’s kingdom here on earth. My words and photographs are inadequate to convey the depth of my experience.
It was such a blessing to touch the same depth of feeling with my St. John’s friends and my family on Saturday night. The moving videos, the personal testimonies of Faith Grace and John (two 11 year olds from Lulwanda), and the music and dancing were almost as inspiring as being back at Lulwanda ... Kathie

Lenten Class:

Everyone is invited to join Pastor Jon in an 8-week Lenten Course called Unbinding the Gospel. The course will begin the first Sunday of Lent, February 26 at 4:30 – 6 pm. The study will include 6 weeks of prayer with a prayer partner and 40 days of praying through a prayer journal which will help you move closer to God and grow as a Christian.

Souper Bowl - Sunday, Friday 5

More than 20 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group:

"Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of
those without even a bowl of soup to eat."

Since that day, more than $81 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the Super Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.

Be part of this movement that is sharing God’s love with those in need. Souper Bowl Sunday is February 5. This year St. John’s Youth will be participating for the 18th year. Every dollar donated will go to Braes Interfaith Ministries.

The Youth will also be serving a variety of soups in McPhail Hall, including "stone soup" created from donated items from the congregation. Bring your favorite fresh or canned ingredient to the kitchen before church to be added to vegetable stock.

St. John's Epistle for January 26, 2011 ✣ Healing Service this Sunday

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

Jack Boelens died on January 23 after a long battle with cancer.  A memorial is planned for Thursday, January 26 at 1 pm at St. Philip Presbyterian Church. Please remember Joan and all the family in your prayers. Many of our members will remember that Jack's installation as Executive Presbyter was held at St. John's. 

Our sympathy is with the family of Becky Crawford and her daughters Erin and Jamie in the death of Bill Crawford.

Our Director of  Christian Education, Mary Sterner, has entered into a time of bed-rest for the remaining months of her pregnancy. Our prayers are with her and we look forward to her continued work from home as she awaits the birth of her child.

Keep us in prayer and in mind as we repair and renovate our education building after it had recent flood damage. Last Sunday the Session decided to use the insurance money we have to repair the damage and take money from memorial funds to upgrade some other rooms with new carpet and paint and put tile in the hallway. The congregation will have the opportunity to pay back the memorial funds by choosing which rooms and which projects they wish to financially support. More details will follow about how you can help support this effort. 

This Sunday is a healing service. You may come forward for prayer during the service or call the church office if you have a prayer request for healing of body, mind or soul. Since the children are singing during the worship service this coming Sunday (1/29) they will not have rehearsal at 11:45. Some of our youth will serve as liturgists and ushers. This promises to be a powerful worship service so fill yourself with prayerful anticipation of what God may do. Speaking of healing, let us remember Johnny Dyson in prayer as he continues to regain his strength at Methodist Hospital. Also, Marjie Knight is in our prayers for her continued recovery from a recent fall.

The sermon this Sunday is called We Would Be Known as Healed by Jesus and Healers of Unclean Spirits and is based on the gospel reading from Mark 1:21-28.  Like the man with the unclean spirit, our healing starts with Jesus in the sanctuary. But as with Jesus, whose fame spread throughout the land after this healing, God wants to extend our healing and our influence beyond the walls of our sanctuary. We are blessed in order to be a blessing to others. May God bless you today. You are already a blessing to me and to many others.

The Gifts of Imperfection

Starting Sunday, February 26 during the Sunday School hour, a small group will be meeting in the church library to discuss Dr. Brene Brown's book The Gifts of Imperfection.

Dr. Brown is a professor at the University of Houston's Graduate School of Social Work and is a nationally recognized speaker.

In calling the disciples Jesus does not ask them to add one more item to their to do list. He invites them into new ways of being. Each of the 12 member churches of Braes Interfaith Ministries has a month in which it is designated to provide food. January is St. John's month to provide food for BIM. Grocery sacks with a list of suggestions can be picked up on the coffee table by the church office. Please return the sacks of food during any Sunday in January. Note: toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant) are always needed. Cash donations are also appreciated. BIM can buy $27 worth of canned food from the Houston Food Bank for every dollar donated. Please write BIM on the memo line of your check.

Ben Carretin passed along a need for donated clothes for some patients that lost greatly in a recent flood and since then, another in an apartment fire. Speak to Ben before the Sunday service at coffee and he will gladly accept whatever you may have for them.

Lenten Course begins February 26, 2012— Unbinding the Gospel

Prayer is as natural an expression of faith as breathing is of the body.

You are invited to join Pastor Jon Burnham and other members of St. John’s in an 8- week Lenten Course called "Unbinding the Gospel." The course will begin the first Sunday of Lent and continue for 8 weeks. The study will include 6 weeks of prayer with a prayer partner and 40 days of praying through a prayer journal. The prayer journal will begin on day 1 after week 2 of the course. On day 5 of the prayer study you will meet with a prayer partner who is also taking this course. The point of the prayer exercises is to help you pray with the scripture, move closer to God and grow as a Christian.

Christ loves us. He loves it when we try to mature in our relationship with him. Our prayers help us. Our prayers help others more than we will. If you are ready to move forward in your faith journey by participating in this transformative Lenten Course, you may speak to Pastor Jon. Everyone is welcome to participate if you are willing to put in the time and do the exercises to experience real spiritual growth during this Lenten season.

Prayer Exercises

Not everyone thinks, works, learns or prays the same way. Some people learn best when they use their creativity through their hands, voice and body. Here are some prayer exercises for Lent.
● Walk around the room while you read the scripture timing the word with your step or breath.
● Read the scripture out loud.
● Act out the Bible story.
● Draw or form a Playdough™ figure of the scripture.
● Read the scripture, then pray while walking.

However you pray, you may discover new methods that work for you. This is not a gimmick but is an expression of your sincere intention to draw closer to God. (Excert from Unbinding the Gospel)

Delivers Meals on Wheels in 2012

Hunger: A gnawing feeling in the stomach. Dizziness. Light-headedness. Headaches. Lethargy or weakness. Inability to concentrate. A craving for food. Pain.

Help fight hunger in Houston by participating in St. John’s Meals on Wheels program. According to research by Dr. Eugene Smolensky, economist and Professor of Public Policy, nearly six million seniors face the threat of hunger each day. Texas in particular has astoundingly high rates of food insecurities for seniors and came in fourth highest in the nation for senior hunger.

In January St. John’s Outreach Committee will be scheduling the 2012 rooster for delivering meals to local elderly people who need food. St. John’s delivers on the first Saturday and the second Sunday of each month. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Phyllis Freeman at 713-776-3548.

All are invited to St. John’s Breakfast, Saturday, February 4, at 8 am. At 8:30, Officer E. J. Joseph from the Houston Police Department will present a program for us entitled "Home Safety."

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,
 
We are still close enough to Christmas to remember the words of the angel who said to Mary, "Fear not!" Remember the words of the angel to the shepherds when the angel announced the birth of Jesus: "Fear not." What are you afraid of? What keeps you awake at night? Fear of financial failure? Fear of embarrassment? Fear of losing your job? Fear of losing your house? Fear of losing your spouse? We are driven by our fears. If we are going to be driven by our fears then let us be driven to the feet of Jesus and pour out our fears at the feet of Jesus. For when we empty out of fears at Jesus' feet then we can truly love. Then we can reach out to others and bring them to Jesus. Then we have a reason to celebrate what Jesus has done for us. Some people have an attitude that "Jesus never did anything for me" but the thing is they never asked Jesus to do anything for them. Pour out your fears at the feet of Jesus and he will honor your gift and fill your emptiness with love.

The sermon scripture this week is John 1:43-51. This is the story of Jesus calling the disciples Nathaniel and Philip to lay down their fishing nets and come follow him. While this text has often been interpreted as a call to mission, it may more appropriately be seen as an epiphany story. More precisely, here Jesus invites you to an epiphany, a revelation of God, in the person of Jesus.

Our Christian sympathy with the family of Rev. Hudson McNair, former Associate Pastor at St. John's, upon the death of his wife, Dottie.

Our Christian sympathy is also with the family of Keith Hill, a former member, who passed away yesterday.

All Committee Day is this Saturday, January 14, in Fellowship Hall. Continental breakfast will be available at 8:45 am. The program begins at 9 am and will conclude before noon. This is the first meeting of the various committees. Come and see what God is doing to bless the world through this congregation.

St. John's Epistle for January 5, 2012 ✛ Ordination & Installation Service ✛ Annual Congregational Meeting

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

The sermon this Sunday, Called and Empowered to Serve, is from Mark 1:4-11. We will consider the implications of Jesus' baptism on our own discipleship. During the service we will ordain and install new elders. After the final hymn we will have the Congregational Meeting this Sunday during worship. The session will present information about the budget for 2012 and any changes in the terms of the call of the pastor will need to be approved. The annual reports may be read here. The treasurers/financial information will be distributed on Sunday morning.

New Covenant's annual Church Officer Enrichment event returns Saturday, January 21, 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrew's Presbyterian, Houston. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. This will be a time of equipping, enrichment, and encouragement for all Church Officers, both those newly ordained or with years of experience, for their calling of spiritual leadership in a changing world. Workshops will help officers and pastors to be better prepared to live out their responsibilities as officers and leaders. Participants may choose to attend two learning options in addition to the thought-provoking keynote presentation by Ted Bolsinger. Here is

Our Christian sympathy is with Teresa Darr's as they mourn the passing of her father last weekend. We are also remembering in prayer those in the hospital: Lelia Agar, Johnny Dyson, Marjie Knight and Helen Roby who was recently hospitalized. In addition, Ed Garza will soon have surgery.

St. John’s Holiday Schedule: The church office will be closed Monday, January 2. Attention 2011 Committee Chairs: The year-end annual committee reports are due in the church office (office.sjpc@gmail.com) by Tuesday, December 3. These reports will be distributed at the January 8 Congregational meeting.

Circes 1, 2 & 3: All ladies are invited to the Presbyterian Women Bible study on Tuesday, January 3, at 9:30 am. The lesson will focus on Lesson 5: Greatly Honored Are Those Who Show Mercy! from Matthew 5:7 and Luke 10:25-37.

New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Eve has always been a time in looking back to the past, and more importantly to the coming year. It’s a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make.

Historians track the origin of this custom to the Babylonians, whose New Year’s celebrations included parties and the custom of making resolutions for the upcoming year, attempting a “fresh start.” One common resolution was to return all borrowed farming equipment.

While New Year’s resolutions are all goals that one should strive for — with 88 percent of Americans setting out to accomplish them each year — less than 20 percent are successful in attaining success in even one of their resolutions. Did your New Year’s resolutions make the top 2011 list?

Regular exercise has been associated with more health benefits than anything else known for men and women. (See sidebar above.) Join your friends and work together learning something new that will create a positive lifestyle change. All are invited to Room 209 (from novice to experienced exercisers) to join in St. John’s fellowship and fitness program.
