St. John's Epistle for February 28, 2013

Dear people who hunger and thirst for God's grace,

This Sunday's sermon from Acts 9:1-19 will consider "The Paul Problem." If you are like me, you may have always been jealous of people who have a dramatic conversion story. Some people, like the apostle Paul, have a clear "before and after" testimony of how Jesus Christ has made a difference in their lives. The apostle Paul, known as Saul in this story, did not start out as a fan of Jesus. He thought Jesus and his followers were heretics that needed to be run out of town.

But after Jesus appeared to Paul, everything changed. When Ananias put his hands on Paul's eyes, a whole new world opened for Paul. Suddenly, Paul saw grace. He saw freedom. He saw forgiveness. He saw a whole world of people who needed the gospel. The soul yearns for many types of nourishment as we hunger and thirst for God.

This Sunday's focus is on the hunger and thirst for grace. In the Lenten season, we return to God, not simply to get recentered and refocused, but to acknowledge our desperate desire for the health and wholeness we find in Christ. The thirst for grace propels us forward, satisfying us like nothing else can.

Surely, this is the bread of heaven, the manna that feeds the spirit, the living water that quenches the soul. Come to the waters of grace. Receive the wine of salvation and the milk of God's teachings, offered without money or price. Come and eat the goodness of Christ's grace, God's steadfast love, and the Spirit's abundant acceptance.

Your communion with Christ giving and receiving pastor,
JON BURNHAM

St. John's Epistle for February 20, 2013

Dear people on a wilderness journey,

We embarked into the Lenten season with a powerful service of repentance and forgiveness during the Ash Wednesday service last week. Now stretch yourself a bit with your own version of Wednesday Prayer and Fasting during Lent. Take something out of your daily routine (food, media, etc.) and replace it with prayer for the leaders and participants of the Unbinding Your Heart transformative experience.

Also remember in prayer today Shirley who is having surgery and my father who is having an eye procedure. We continue to pray for  for Ken and Dan as they recover from surgery. There are many others we are remembering in prayer through our two PRAYER WALLS in the office building and in the sanctuary. Feel free to add your public prayer requests there.

This Sunday we host a Blood Drive. Taking the time to make a donation can help up to four people who are in crisis. No appointment is needed. Come to Room 209 in the office building from 8 am – 12 noon.

"Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth."  (Psalm 46:10)  When was the last time you were still? All right action arises from a certain kind of stillness. For me it is called centering prayer. What is it called for you? Find and incorporate a spiritual practice of intentional stillness. This will lead you to a place of peace and power in your life. There is a certain power waiting for you in the silence of Lent.

Your wonderstruck at God's mighty shush pastor,
JON BURNHAM

Who does sharing bring joy to?

One Great Hour of Sharing participants

Dear Friend,

Devastation. Distress. Death. Darkness. Natural disasters, as we have borne witness to through Superstorm Sandy, are tragic. But through the tragedy, uncertainty, and fear, you were safe. Perhaps you even helped others.

Thank you to the tens of thousands of volunteers who have offered themselves in service. You've done so much to help others rebuild their lives after Superstorm Sandy. But our work is not done. People still need your help.

At this time, I ask you to please share your good fortune and give a loving and faithful donation to One Great Hour of Sharing. Click here to give a donation online now.

Your generous gift will help people affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and assist in the empowerment of the poor and oppressed.

One Great Hour of Sharing promotion officially starts the first Sunday in Lent—February 17—which is also "Wear your blue PDA t-shirt Sunday." This special day, initiated by Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), honors volunteers and shows those affected by natural disasters that we are still here to help them. Please join us by wearing your t-shirt if you have volunteered, or by making a donation to help support their work.

The generous donations to PDA from loving people like you make immediate assistance and long-term recovery in the United States and Caribbean nations affected by this storm possible. Many people lost their loved ones and their homes, but you can give them hope in this time of need. Please give a donation online today.

On this special day, Ash Wednesday, share your good fortune with families who have suffered and those who are still suffering because of Superstorm Sandy by making a donation to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). Your gift, together with the thousands of other anticipated gifts in response to Jesus' call, will help people in their time of need.

Faithfully yours,
Sam Locke

St. John's Epistle for Ash Wednesday 2013

Dear Lenten people of God,

You are invited to the Ash Wednesday Service today at 7 pm in the sanctuary. We will move into the courtyard for the administration of the ashes part of the service so dress warmly for the outdoor part of the service. Copies of the Unbinding Your Heart book will be in the narthex so pick yours up and read the introduction and chapter one before your first class.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of solemn observance in many Christian denominations, lasting for a period of approximately six weeks leading up to Easter Sunday.
  • During Lent this year we have a Prayer Wall bulletin board in the sanctuary and the office building. Write your prayer requests and pin them there and we will join you in prayer.
  • You are also encouraged to make each Wednesday a day of fasting and prayer. You may choose your way of fasting which may include skipping one or more meals or denying yourself of whatever media you prefer on Wednesday evenings. Use the time you carve out for prayer for our church and in particular for the Unbinding the Heart groups.
Today we pray for Ken Krueger who is having hip replacement surgery and Ava Parker who is in the hospital. May God bring healing to their lives. More "happenings" are linked below if you scroll down below my signature. After awhile as you read and pray, you may begin to realize that the saying is true and worthy of full acceptance: Healing happens here.

Your soon to have a black cross on the forehead pastor,
JON BURNHAM

Ash Wednesday Service, February 13, 7 pm

On February 13 at 7 pm you are invited to a powerful Ash Wednesday service that will include imposition of ashes on the forehead. The imposition of ashes will occur in the courtyard if weather permits. During the service we are invited to write a list of our sins which we will take outdoors into the courtyard. After burning our sins to signify our forgiveness by Christ, participants may come forward for the imposition of ashes.

The ashes we use are gathered from the burning of palm branches from last year’s Palm Sunday. The ashes are mixed with water from the baptismal font to make a paste. This paste is used by the pastor and liturgists to make the sign of the cross on each of those present while saying the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

St. John's Epistle for February 7, 2013

Dear set free people of God,

Unbinding Your Heart groups are forming now. Unbinding Your Heart is a 6 week book study and small group experience that will make you stronger in your personal walk with God, introduce you to a deeper relationship with other group members, and will strengthen our church and improve our ability to achieve our mission in the community. The groups will begin meeting around the First Sunday in Lent and finish around the end of March. Call the church office to learn more or join a group.

This Sunday, February 10, at 5:00 pm, the youth in grades 6-12 will meet in Fellowship Hall to consider "Getting Real." How do we get real? We will talk about how we can be true to ourselves and how to get real. Mary, Dave, and Mark invite our young people to come and bring a friend and let's get real.

Next Wednesday, on February 13 at 7 pm in the sanctuary, you are invited to a powerful Ash Wednesday service that will include imposition of ashes on the forehead. During the service we will write a list of our sins which we will take outdoors into the courtyard. After burning our sins to signify our forgiveness by Christ, participants may come forward for the imposition of ashes. Rev. Linda Herron, our Parish Associate, will preach the sermon. Let us join together in worship and unity as we begin this Lenten season.

Remember in prayer Shelia Johnson in the death of her grandfather whose funeral service is today; Shannon DeSouza in the death of her grandmother this morning; Lisa Darr Jury at home recovering from a migraine; Harriet Harper at home recovering from a fall; Ava Parker at Southwest Memorial Hospital; and Jim Schneider at Bayou Manor.

Your unbinding pastor,
JON BURNHAM

St. John's Bible Circle

Circles 1 and 2 will meet Tuesday, February 5 at 9:30 am in Building 1. Lesson 6: The Elders (1 Peter 5:1-11: 2  John) will be discussed.

In God's household, those of elder status (by position and/or age and experience) are charged to demonstrate selfless love and a nurturing spirit to those under their care, and to equip sisters and brothers in Christ that they might embody the same qualities. Celebrate Ash Wednesday, February 13

Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. Ashes were used in ancient times according to the Bible to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent’s way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. An ancient example of one’s
expressing penitence is found in Job 42:6 when Job says to God: "I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes." Examples are found in other books of the Bible including Jonah 3:6, Matthew 11:21 and Luke 10:13. Come and prepare your heart for the Lenten season
