Human Trafficking - Lets do something about it!

Sunday Weekly Reminders, August 30

Circles, Tuesday, September 1: Circle 1 chair, Louise Cherry and Circle 2 chair, Linda Dyson, will both meet at St. John’s at 9:30 am; Night Circle: Kathleen Captain, chair, will meet at St. John’s at 7:30 pm.

Focus Registration Deadline: Brochures with the registration form can be picked up from the coffee table outside the church office and in the Narthex. The deadline to hand in your registration form to St. John’s office is Sunday, September 6. Christian Formation will pay all early registration fees. If you miss this deadline, please mail your registration form with your payment to Carrie Walker by September 15. Focus will meet at Grace Presbyterian on Saturday, October 3.

Church Office Closed, September 7: The church staff wishes all a safe and restful Labor Day holiday.

St. John’s Breakfast, September 12: Please make note of the change of date. We’re planning a good breakfast usually at 8 am, and then at 8:30 Aaron Jacobsen will tell us about his vocation as an orthotist and prosthetic resident. He makes limbs for individuals who have lost them due to accident, diabetes, or military encounters.

Presbyterian Women, Sunday, September 13, 12 pm: All women are invited to a sneak preview of the 2009-2010 Bible Study (Joshua and His Journey of Faith) at a luncheon with a special program presented by Mary Marcotte.

Mark your calendar, Sunday, September 20, 6 pm: Everyone is invited to a special performance by THE JOHNNY DYSON BAND presenting a unique musical program featuring 40 years of Your Kind of Music for listening and dancing.

Thanksgiving Coffee Project: Certified organic and fair trade coffee, grown by the Peace Kawomera (Delicious Coffee) Cooperative of Uganda, is available for sale during brunch in McPhail Hall. The Cooperative is made up of 750 + small scale farmers and their families from three faiths: Jews, Christians and Muslims. This coffee makes wonderful presents for friends and families!

Chancel Choral Rehearsal: Choir will now practice on Thursday nights at 7:30 pm.

Human Trafficking in Houston

St. John’s Book Group, Tuesday, August 25

St. John’s Book Group will continue discussing the book, A History of God by Karen Armstrong, at its August meeting. Everyone is invited to join the book group discussion at 7:30 pm. The only requirement is a love of books and reading! Led by Greg Weiher.

2009 PW Christmas Boxes — International Seafarers’ Center

"Every seafarer prays to come to Houston during the Christmas Season!" said a seaman from the Philippines. "Shoe boxes are filled to the brim with just the things a seafarer needs and wants, things we really must have and things we’d never buy on our salaries."

To make this dream come true, now is the time to start shopping for those basic items: heavy work socks, bath-size bar soap, disposable razors, shaving cream, tooth brushes and tooth paste, shampoos, deodorant, dental floss, lip balm…(I will be happy to do the shopping for you!)

Items for male seafarers can be put in the container provided in the Recycle Room in Fellowship Hall and will be delivered to the Port of Houston during the holidays.

Mustard Seed Project Update

Over the summer 10 St. John’s members have been busy helping children in the community through the Mustard Seed Project. As you may know, through the Project, each participant was given $100 to help an at-risk child, or children, in the Houston community. Here is what participants have been doing all summer:

Michael and Felicity Bisase: After volunteering at Shearn Elementary and seeing a need to help impoverished students, the Bisases put their Mustard Seed money towards buying school supplies. At the school 73% of the students are Hispanic and 23% are black. Sixty-four percent of them are limited in their English proficiency, and 95% of them are economically disadvantaged. Of the total schoolpopulation (466) 87% qualify for the free lunch program. Donations will help offset start-of-school costs. The Bisases also are collecting socks for students at Small Steps Nurturing Center. Small Steps is a non-profit organization that provides social, emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual growth of economically at-risk children in Houston’s inner city.

Jennifer Durand: Jennifer is working with an adoption advocate at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church to provide "My Stuff" bags to children who are picked up from abusive homes and placed in foster homes by Child Protective Services. The bags contain stuffed animals, blankets, hygiene products, beauty items (for girls), and a moving checklist. Donations will be used to help ease stress caused by the abrupt changes in environment.
Jennifer also has collected clothing, hygiene products, baby items, and furniture for the Covenant House, a shelter for run-away youth.

Kay Greer: When it came to the Mustard Seed Project, Kay really took the bull by the horns. She recently donated more than 400 children’s books to Small Steps Nurturing Center. The school’s teachers will deliver them to students on their first home visit just before the fall semester begins. According to Kay, 12 people, including six people from St. John’s, donated money or books. Also, she purchased clothing for a boy who will be entering pre-kindergarten. Finally, as if Kay hasn’t stretched the dollar enough, she is in the process of collecting school supplies for Braes Interfaith Ministries.

Ann Hardy: Through her volunteer efforts at Small Steps Nurturing Center, Ann met and got to know "Roberto," a troubled youth who has had problems in school. As a result, Ann used the grant money to provide aptitude testing for Roberto.

Kathie Hartzog: Kathie elected to help students at Shearn Elementary School by supplying them with school uniforms. The donations will ease the economic impact of children and parents in the community by providing students the proper attire that is required of them by the Houston Independent School District.

Lynne Parson: To ease the impact of moving away from an abusive environment and into a homeless shelter, Lynne is making care bags for children. The bags will contain personal hygiene products, a stuffed animal, paper and crayons (or colored pencils, sharpies, etc.) and a book mark with a Bible verse on it.

Mary Sterner: Having a friend at Morton Ranch Elementary School, Mary decided to provide students with $5 gift cards from a book re-sale shop so each child could pick out and purchase his own book. (The gift cards were part of a take-home reading bag for students.) Morton Ranch is a Title 1 school in Katy, TX, where many of its students speak English as a Second Language and have few books at home.

Mark and Shannon DeSouza: With the DeSouza family heavily involved at BIM, it seemed fitting that Mark and Shannon donated a table, chairs, and games to the center for children whose parents are seeking assistance at the food pantry. BIM supplies food and clothing assistance, as well as employment counseling, to people in need. With this donation, children will have activities to do when accompanying their parents to BIM.

Name Tag Sunday - August 30

How friendly is St. John’s? It’s as friendly as we make it. Old-fashioned friendliness come from the hearts of people who love God and enjoy helping others feel at home in their church. And one place that starts is with a sincere expression of welcome.

St. John’s Evangelism Ministry Team will host a Name Tag Sunday on Rally day to help all visitors and members feel this special friendliness, St. John’s style. Below are five steps to offering a heartfelt welcome to all:

1. Speak to the other person first using their name. Don’t wait for him or her to take the initiative. Make a note of their name so you can greet them by name next time you see them. Remember, saying a person’s name makes him feel welcome and appreciated.

2. If there is someone you don’t know, introduce yourself to him or her.

3. Be pleasant in words and expressions. A great church cannot be built with frowns.

4. Guide newcomers to the worship service and then to any fellowship event after worship and introduce them to other members.

5. Encourage people to participate in those church activities that interest them.

Week of Prayer for our Children: Day Three

Day Three - August 18, 2009
Prayer Concerning the Increasing Infant Mortality Rate in our City

Did you know that parts of Houston have Third World Infant Mortality Rates? As a nation, the infant mortality rate declined by 10% between 1995 and 2004: however, since 2000, the trend has reversed for Harris County. The U.S. ranks 29th in the world on infant mortality – tied with Poland and Slovakia, and behind Cuba.

Prayer Targets for Day Three:

1. Pray that our city would understand God’s heart for each precious infant, Psalm 139:13-18.

2. Pray that God would raise up more leaders to champion the cause of infants, Psalms 82:3.

Prayer:

God and giver of life, we praise and worship You today. We thank You that Your Word says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. You have not only given us life and breath, You created us with a special plan and purpose in mind. Thank You for providing mercy and grace every day - for the gift of eternal life and abundant life through Jesus Christ.

As we are blessed with many resources and equipped with the largest Medical Center in the world, we are deeply troubled by the steep rise in infant mortality among mothers in our city. We turn to You, Lord, for wisdom and discernment as we search for ways to reverse this trend. Come Holy Spirit! Show us what is needed to protect and bless the lives of all children at every stage of development.

We thank You for the people and programs You have provided in our communities and pray that You would encourage, bless and multiply their efforts.

Lord, grant grace and insight to uncover the social issues and injustices that must be addressed to create significant change in infant mortality in our city. As Creator and Sustainer of life, we ask You to address the environmental issues that affect life in the womb. Where human hands leave off and fall short of needed remedies, we ask that Your mighty Hand would intervene.

Forgive us for our slowness to see and understand this urgent need impacting families in our city. Help us to multiply awareness in our city so that new doors will open where mothers can find reliable prenatal care for their children. Continue to create in our lives - Mission Houston

Peace Kawomera Coffee Cooperative

Mirembe Kawomera means “delicious peace” in the Ugandan language Luganda. The coffee is grown by 750+ small scale farmers through the Peace Kawomera Co-op, which includes Jews, Christians and Muslins working together to improve their lives.

The certified organic and fair trade coffee can be purchased at St. John’s and will make wonderful gifts for family and friends. Your purchase supports the Co-op but can also improve the health of your family and friends.

The newest research shows that coffee may reduce the risk of developing gallstones, discourage the development of colon cancer, improve cognitive function, reduce the risk of liver damage in people at high risk for liver disease, and reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Coffee has also been shown to improve endurance performance in long-duration physical activities.

Prayer for Children and Families in Poverty

"In the poor, we find Jesus in distressing disguise." Mother Teresa

Did you know that 24% of Harris County children live in poverty and a total of 47% live in low income families? Texas is ranked 46th in percentage of children living in poverty, with only Alabama, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi doing worse. Related to poverty, Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured children in the nation at 24.6%.

Prayer Targets for Day Two:

1. Pray for God to give us His heart for the poor, Isaiah 58:6-8.

2. Pray that we learn to minister to the poor as unto Christ, Matthew 25:37-40.

Prayer:

Almighty God, source of life and every good gift, we worship You as Savior, Lord and Provider today. In You the scriptures declare there is no want. Thank You that You love all people with an everlasting love, and that You are for us! Your heart breaks when people are in pain. Thank You for the many times You have met us during our times of physical, emotional, spiritual and material need. Thank You, awesome God! We thank You for programs and ministries that are effective in providing for the needs of the poor. Thank You for those who serve faithfully to empower parents so they can become financially stable and provide for their families.

Lord, we recognize that Your heart is moved by the cries of the poor. We add our voices to theirs and ask You to come to their rescue. Motivate Your Church across this city to turn their hearts and attention to the plight of the poor. Forgive us for our sins of apathy and indifference – when Your heart is filled with compassion. Help us to prioritize our lives so that we can better reflect Your heart.

Come, Lord, especially during this season of financial challenge. At every level of life and commerce, renew us with an urgent sense of faithful stewardship of money, time and talents. Help us make the needed changes in our lives, our work and our financial stewardship so that we can honor You. Come, Lord, today and deal with systems of injustice we have either created or allowed to perpetuate through passivity. Renew Your Church to the spirit and practice of loving our neighbors as You love us.

We praise and worship You as the One who guides and provides.

A Week of Prayer for our Children, August 16 – 22

St. John’s is proud to announce they will participate in the Week of Prayer for Our Children, with 80 congregations in the Houston area. The intercessory prayer project is sponsored by Mission Houston. It is there hope to raise up an army of praying people seeking God’s heart for the children of our city. A copy of the Prayer Guide can be picked up at St. John's church office.

Praying for the Children and Families of Many Nations in Houston

Did you know that in 2007 an estimated 75% of children in Houston between birth and 17 are non-Anglo? Houston is the second most diverse city in the U.S. with over 300 people groups and 140 nations represented. More than 200 languages are spoken in Houston. Let’s pray for the growing diverse population of children across our city.

Prayer Targets for Day One:

1. Pray for God to give us His heart for the nations in our city, John 3:16.

2. Pray that we would see each family and each child as He sees them – as potential new creations in Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:16-17.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, we worship You as King of kings and Lord of lords. You are the God of all people and there is no god like You. We celebrate Your love and guiding hand as many nations have come to our city to live, work, attend school and experience the blessings and benefits within our city. We recognize that fullness in life comes ultimately from You, the author and sustainer of life.

Forgive us, Lord, for consciously or unconsciously allowing walls of prejudice to form in our thoughts and actions. Forgive us, Lord, for erecting walls of division and classism that grieve Your heart and damage relationships. Take the bricks that we have used to build walls and use them to build bridges of love, goodwill and unity. During this special season of prayer for our city’s most vulnerable children, help us to celebrate the remarkable diversity that makes up our city.

We especially pray for children of all nationalities in every community. We ask Your Spirit of truth and justice to inform our thoughts and guide our actions as we seek to be loving witnesses to our neighbors – rich or poor, irregardless of race or ethnicity. Lord God, You have deposited rich gifts in all people – from all nations. Cultivate within our hearts a love that blesses and calls forth the inherent gifts You’ve given to all the children and parents you’ve brought to our city.

We worship You, the God of all nations and the King of Glory. These things we ask in the strong name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Summer and the Seamen’s Boxes

Its not too early to think about collecting items for St. John’s mission to the Port of Houston and visiting seamen which are delivered in November. During your summer travels please collect those hotel shampoos and lotions.

Parking Lot Closed!

St. John’s main parking lot (West Bellfort entrance, at the recycling bins) will be closed this week, Monday, July 27 to Friday, August 2 for resealing. Please use the small parking lot located next to the Sanctuary (Balmforth Lane entrance) when visiting the church.

St. John’s Book Group

St. John’s Book Group will being reviewing it’s new book, A History of God by Karen Armstrong, at its July 28th meeting. Everyone is invited to join the book group discussion at 7:30 pm.

The only requirement is a love of books and reading!

August 1: Day of Service

The Presbytery of New Covenant is mobilizing to hold a Day of Service for Houston and all of our outlying communities. Saturday, August 1 has been set aside as a day to make a difference by getting out into our communities and putting our faith into action.

THE VISION: To blanket every community in our presbytery with acts of service and compassion by involving every one of our congregations in adopting a project.

As part of this Day of Service for Houston, St. John’s Mission Ministry Team has scheduled a work day at Shearn Elementary School, 9802 Stella Link, only 2 miles away from St. John’s. Mark your calendars for August 1, 8 am – 3 pm. We will organize the teachers’ workroom, catalog books in the library and cover hallway and classroom bulletin boards. All work will be inside! If you have any questions, call Kathie, 713-283-0098.

Delicious Peace Coffee — Peace Kawomera Cooperative

Mirembe Kawomera means "delicious peace" in the Ugandan language Luganda.
In 2004 JJ Keki, a Ugandan Jew, created the Peace Kawomera Cooperative. Mr. Keki traveled on foot, knocking on each of his neighbors’ doors, Jews, Christians and Muslins, asking all to put aside their differences. This community of coffee farmers was struggling to make a living. Now the farmers sell directly to the Thanksgiving Coffee Company. This has enabled farmers to send their children to school, afford health care, start savings accounts and reinvest in their farms.

The Peace Kawaomera Co-op is made up of 750+ small-scale farmers and their families and has a strong leadership with all three faiths serving on the executive board.

The Thanksgiving Coffee Company motto is "Not Just a Cup — but a "Just" Cup of Coffee."
The co-op’s future depends on selling it’s coffee. The certified organic and fair trade coffee can be purchased during summer brunches.

Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services (PCHAS)— Casondra Brown

Greetings St. John’s: I want to thank you for your continued support and encouragement. Without you the Houston Child and Family Program with Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services would not be able to provide Christ-centered services to children and families in need.
I would like to tell you about two volunteer opportunities that are available with the Houston Child and Family Program. I am hoping to expand my client base by asking trained and qualified volunteers to perform a variety of services on an irregular basis. The volunteers must be flexible in their schedules; willing to use their personal vehicle for voluntary transporting of clients; able to take direction and supervision from the Child and Family Specialist; be discreet in their behavior and dress; possess the ability to keep information confidential; and attend an 8-hour training session.

1. Administrative/Family Aid Volunteer: Driving clients to appointments with doctors or counselors. Supervising children during parenting classes. Organizing events. Working in the office with client files

2. Professional Service Volunteer-Pro-bono Legal Service: Be willing to provide legal consultation to clients in need. Assist in helping clients understand rights in various situations. Represent clients in court for various situations.

Mustard Seed Project Request: One of the ongoing Mustard Seed projects is the collection of children’s books for ages 2 – 6 for Small Steps Nurturing Center. The teachers will visit each child in his/her home and give each child a book. St. John's Sunday Weekly Reminders, July 5

Attention Ministry Team Members: All team members please check with your chairs concerning your summer meeting schedule. Many of the traditionally held meetings in July and August have been cancelled or moved to a different time.

September 20 Event: A special musical program, “Your Kind of Music,” featuring 40 years of popular music by the Johnny Dyson Band in McPhail Hall has been scheduled for Sunday, September 20. Mark your calendar and plan to attend this great fun event!

Project Update: The Mustard Seed Project kicked off at the beginning of the month with nine participants: Kay Greer, Mary Sterner, Michael and Felicity Bisase, Mark and Shannon DeSouza, Lynne Parsons, Ann Hardy, and Jennifer Durand. For the Project, one person has chosen to collect English and Spanish children’s books, another is collecting donations for the Covenant House (a home for run-away youth), and yet another person is using the grant money to provide aptitude testing for a troubled youth. Thank you to these participants who are giving of themselves and their time! There is still room for one more participant. If you are interested in participating in the Mustard Seed Project, please contact Jennifer Durand at 713-726-0425.

A Big Thank You: The Property Team would like to thank everyone who helped moved the pew from Room 205 to its new home, the Scout Room.

St. John's Sunday Weekly Reminders, June 28

The Church Offices: The office will be open on Friday, July 3, and closed on Monday, July 6, in celebration of July 4.

Attention Ministry Team Members: All team members please check with your chairs concerning your summer meeting schedule. Many of the traditionally held meetings in July and August have been cancelled or moved to a different time.

September 20 Event: A special musical program, “Your Kind of Music,” featuring 40 years of popular music by the Johnny Dyson Band in McPhail Hall has been scheduled for Sunday, September 20. Mark your calendar and plan to attend this great fun event!

Project Update: The Mustard Seed Project kicked off at the beginning of the month with nine participants: Kay Greer, Mary Sterner, Michael and Felicity Bisase, Mark and Shannon DeSouza, Lynne Parsons, Ann Hardy, and Jennifer Durand. These participants were given $100 each to serve an at-risk child, or several children, in his/her community through acts of compassion. For the Project, one person has chosen to collect English and Spanish children’s books, another is collecting donations for the Covenant House (a home for run-away youth), and yet another person is using the grant money to provide aptitude testing for a troubled youth. Thank you to these participants who are giving of themselves and their time!There is still room for one more participant. If you are interested in participating in the Mustard Seed Project, please contact Jennifer Durand at 713-726-0425.

At their meeting on June 25, your Session ...
●Heard an update on plans to refurbish the Session Room.
●Approved St. John’s involvement in Week of Prayer for our Children in August.
●Elected Katie Coughlen and Marie Kutz to serve as elder representatives at a called Presbyety meeting on July 14.
●Approved a motion to increase the number of elders in each class from four to five beginning with the 2012 class. And approved a motion to increase the elders in each currently serving class from four to five by staggered terms, adding an elder to serve a one year term for the 2010 class and an elder to serve for two years for the 2011 class. These two motions require a congregational meeting for approval. This congregational meeting will be held on July 5, 2009 during worship.

Summer Mission Trips

St. John’s members are reaching out into the world and sharing God’s love this summer. Our youth will travel to Houma, Louisiana, July 12-18, with the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) to help repair hurricane damage. Kathie Hartzog will travel to Uganda, working at the Lluwanda Children’s Homes and Léonie Tchoconté and John Freeman will travel to Haiti with Solar Under the Son. Books are being collected by Kay Greer, a participant in the Mustard Seed Project. St. John’s is also introducing a new outreach mission, Mirembe Kawomera. You can also participate in a mission project in Houston with the Presbytery of New Covenant on Saturday, August 1.

THE VISION: To blanket every community in our presbytery with acts of service and compassion by involving every one of our congregations in adopting a project.

As part of this Day of Service for Houston, St. John’s Mission Ministry Team has scheduled a work day at Shearn Elementary School, 9802 Stella Link, only 2 miles away from St. John’s. Mark your calendars for August 1, 8 am – 3 pm. We will organize the teachers’ workroom, catalog books in the library and cover hallway and classroom bulletin boards. Lluwanda Children’s Home— Kathie Hartzog

It was a simple question, "Is there something I can do for the teachers?"

St. John’s has been involved with the Grace International Children’s Home in Lluwanda, Uganda (http://www.ugandaorphans.org/about_lulwanda.htm/) for over 4 years. Representatives of Grace International have "manned" a booth at the St. John’s Living Gift Market since 2003. St. John’s members have partnered with Grace International by purchasing materials for construction and are sponsoring individual children who now reside there. Photographs of some of the children are on the Mission Ministry Team bulletin board in Building 2.

I stopped by the Lluwanda Children’s Home booth at the 2008 Living Gift Market. Poised to write my check, I asked a very simple question, "Is there something I can do for the teachers?" The response was, "Yes, they need someone to come and train them how to teach reading and writing."

When you read this I will be in Uganda. I am with a mission team from a church in Wimberly, Texas. We will focus on two major projects during our two-week stay:

· Organize a 4000 book library – In 2008 a library building was constructed at the Lulwanda Children’s Home. It will serve the teachers and children living in the home as well as the residents of the nearby village. 4000 books were collected in the U.S. and have already been shipped to Uganda. Upon arrival some of the mission team members will set about making bookshelves. The other mission team members will separate and organize the books. Once the books are organized on the shelves, the team will train the students and teachers on procedures to check the books out and in.
· Train teachers working with Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students on strategies for teaching reading and writing to young children. I was given a budget with which to purchase materials for these two classrooms and will assist these teachers in making plans for their application for accreditation by the Ugandan government. Mission Team members and I will also teach a series of demonstration lessons.

New Haiti Mission Trip

For most of us July 4th is the day for celebrating the USA’s birthday. For Léonie Tchoconté and John Freeman it is the day they will be leaving for Haiti as part of the Solar Under the Son/ Living Waters for the World team that will install a solar powered water treatment system at the St. Thomas Episcopal School in Arcahaie, Haiti.

Léonie will lead a small group that will teach hygiene and the proper use of clean water to mothers and children at the school while John will work with others installing the water treatment system and training the local men how to operate the system. They have been planning for months, and they will carry with them the equipment to build the water system and the health educational materials, some of which are written in Creole. This installation is not the first Living Waters for the World system in Haiti, but it is the first of a new generation of water systems because it will be powered by photovoltaic solar panels that convert sunlight to electricity. Electric power grids in Haiti are almost non-existent due to poverty, neglect and hurricanes. Haiti is the poorest county in the Western Hemisphere with an average income of about $1 per day and a life expectancy of 44 years.

Solar Power is a logical solution for providing electricity for clean water systems and the Synod of the Sun is developing a new program called Solar Under the Son to train people to install solar power systems in developing countries. St. John’s and New Covenant Presbytery are supporting the July installation that Léonie and John will participate in. You can contribute further through the new St. John’s Mission Fund. Also look for the SUTS/LWW booth at the Living Gift Market on November 22.

St. John’s Holiday Schedule

St. John’s office and campus will be closed on Monday, July 4, in observation of July 4th holiday. St. John’s staff wishes all a safe, restful and enjoyable holiday.

Delicious Peace Coffee — Peace Kawomera Cooperative

Mirembe Kawomera means "delicious peace" in the Ugandan language Luganda.
In 2004 JJ Keki, a Ugandan Jew, created the Peace Kawomera Cooperative. Mr. Keki traveled on foot, knocking on each of his neighbors’ doors, Jews, Christians and Muslins, asking all to put aside their differences. This community of coffee farmers was struggling to make a living. Now the farmers sell directly to the Thanksgiving Coffee Company. This has enabled farmers to send their children to school, afford health care, start savings accounts and reinvest in their farms. The Peace Kawaomera Co-op is made up of 750+ small-scale farmers and their families and has a strong leadership with all three faiths serving on the executive board.

The Thanksgiving Coffee Company motto is "Not Just a Cup — but a "Just" Cup of Coffee."
The co-op’s future depends on selling it’s coffee. The certified organic and fair trade coffee can be purchased during summer brunches.

Summer Congregational Brunch Pot-Luck, June 28: A new tradition begins! On the last Sunday in June St. John’s congregation will be bringing food for the brunch in McPhail Hall following worship. Bring your favorite dish to share. Drinks will be provided.
On June 28 please welcome our Ghanaian brothers and sisters as they join us in worship. They are also very excited to be sharing some authentic African dishes with us at the pot luck immediately following worship.

Mustard Seed Project: One of the Mustard Seed projects going on this summer is the collection of children’s books for children ages 2-6. At the end of the summer the books will be given to Small Steps Nurturing Center, which has one campus in First Ward and another in Fifth Ward. The children in the Center will be encouraged to take the books home to keep. If you have books appropriate for ages 2-6 that you would like to donate, please contact Kay Greer.

Ode to a Green Thumbed God

Psalm 65 is a whopper. Deists need not apply. For this God is not a clock winder who gets the machine going and flits off to another universe to take care of some unfinished business. Rather, this is a STAYING God, an ever present God, a green thumb God who delights in the detailed daily maintenance tasks. Listen up to the Psalmist.

Praise is due to you,

O God, in Zion;

and to you shall vows be performed,

O you who answer prayer!

You forgive our transgressions ...

By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance ...

By your strength you established the mountains ...

You silence the roaring of the seas ...

you provide the people with grain...

You crown the year with your bounty ...

Pastures, hills, meadows, and valley shout and sing together for joy delighting in an intimate connection with the loving God whose divine hands fashioned clod hoppers, crawfish, you and me, and yes, even the smarty pants who can't see beyond their own nose to get a sense of the unseen Seer who is still intimately involved in a love relationship with all earthly things.

Name Tag Sunday - June 7

On Sunday, June 7, St. John’s will hold it’s first "Nametag Sunday." As you walk down the walkway to worship that morning the Evangelism Ministry Team asks that you stop at the table and write your name on the tags provided. Please wear the nametag at worship and during brunch.

Everyone get nervous when they have to address someone they don’t know. Everyone also gets embarrassed when they talk to a person they have known for a while but can’t remember their name. BUT… if the person is wearing a nametag, all nervousness and embarrassment can be avoided. Nametags have the power to "introduce" because the nametag serves as an icebreaker.

On Nametag Sunday, the Evangelism Ministry Team asks you to approach someone you usually do not greet with a friendly hello, say their name, and see how their face lights up. Remember a person’s name is the sweetest sound a person can hear and saying their name makes them feel welcome and appreciated. Stay and hold a conversation, learn about their interests, and hear their life story.

"Wonder Team" Needs Summer Volunteers

St. John’s Sandwich Makers, "The Wonder Team," will continue to make sandwiches during the upcoming summer months in McPhail Hall on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 6 pm. Please join us on June 10 and 24 and July 8 and 22. No experience is necessary, and you’ll be home within an hour!

Our sandwiches are delivered to Kids Meals, a 501(c) non-profit organization which serves over 1200 pre-school children in need of food. It provides free nutritious meals that are delivered to the homes of the children Monday through Friday year-round. Kids Meals partnership with Neighborhood Centers Inc. and Houston Food Bank feeds a child for only 35 cents per meal. Visit www.kidsmealhouston.com to learn more.

It is said the difference between sympathy and compassion is that the one who sympathizes sees and feels but does nothing. The one who has compassion sees, feels and then does something about the need.

Jesus asks us to help the sick, and giving blood is one way that even a non-medical person can render a vital medical service. Donated blood saves lives!

Sunday Weekly Reminders, May 31

St. John's Breakfast - Saturday, June 6, 8:00 am: Pot luck breakfast - bring your favorite dish, and at 8:30 Kathy Roth will be our speaker, talking about mental health/mental retardation. We all need updates on a subject that probably affects all of us. Come for breakfast and relax! If you need a ride please contact Thalia Bunnell at 713-723-5215, or Linda Dobbin at 281-778-5348. Remember, there are no breakfasts in July and August.

Blood Drive, June 7: Please come and share the gift of life in Building One, 8 am – 12:30 pm. Giving blood is one way that even a non-medical person can render a vital medical service. Please come and help us meet our quota.

Name Tag Sunday, June 7: Remember a person’s name is the sweetest sound a person can hear and saying their name makes them feel welcome and appreciated. Please stop by the table under the walkway and fill out a name tag to wear during worship and our first brunch.

Summer Brunches: St. John’s summer tradition begins on June 7 with the Congregational Life/Fellowship Ministry Team serving brunch in McPhail Hall following worship. Everyone is invited, members, friends and guests to enjoy this wonderful time of fellowship.

St. John’s Book Group, Tuesday, June 9: Our book group will continue to meet during the summer months. All are invited to come, Room 203 at 7:30 pm.

Scholarship Application Deadline, June 15: The Myrtis McPhail Scholarship Fund provides a scholarship grant to any active St. John’s member. Applications can be picked up in the church office.

Summer Congregational Brunch Pot-Luck, June 28: A new tradition begins! On the last Sunday in June St. John’s congregation will be bringing the food for the brunch in McPhail Hall following worship. Bring your favorite dish to share. Drinks will be provided.
