Dear daring and committed disciples of Jesus Christ,
Our prayers are with the family of our former pastor, Rev. John Shute, as they mourn his death. John died from a blood clot last Thursday, on February 28. He served as pastor of St. John's Presbyterian Church from 1994 to 2001. John's wife, Janice, is especially in our prayers. Funeral arrangements have been made for Thursday, March 7, at noon at Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. We have some members who will attend the funeral.
Our prayers are also with the family of Dave Muanza as they mourn the death of his father last week in Congo, Africa. We continue to pray for healing for Frances Stanley, and celebrate the recovery of William Ator from malaria and Lisa Darr Jury from migraines. We are grateful for Shirley Boyd's successful surgery and pray for her full recovery. I will preach about the power of prayer this Sunday in Luke 5:1-10 in a sermon called "The Prayer Plunge." We also look forward to the Healing Service on March 17.
Kathie Hartzog will host us at a Small Steps dedication ceremony for their new wing from 4-6 pm today. Tours will be given before and after the ceremony at 2902 Jensen Drive Houston, TX 77026 in the Fifth Ward. They do amazing work with the children at Small Steps and we celebrate the conclusion of their new wing as we continue to lift them up in prayer.
Join your friends from Salem Evangelical Lutheran and Westbury Methodist for a Palm Exchange in the courtyard of St. John's Presbyterian Church at 10 am on March 24, Palm Sunday. Refreshments will be served. We will share a brief liturgy and then process back to our various churches. Plan to come and celebrate with our friends from neighboring churches.
