Something New: Solar Under the Sun

Solar power is on the rise and the Synod of the Sun is out in front with a new ministry Solar Under the Sun. This ministry is designed to provide solar power to people in developing countries to help them alleviate hardship while also becoming better stewards of God's green earth. As Christians, we can join together with those in need to share both the power of the sun and the grace of the risen Son.
Solar Under the Sun will initially work in partnership with the Synod of Living Waters to augment the Living Waters for the World (LWW) program. LWW has worked to establish sources of clean water in some of the most impoverished areas of the world where safe water is often the difference between life and death. This is done through the construction, in cooperation with local people, often Presbyterian Churches, of simple but effective water systems. Hundreds of water systems have been installed in dozens of countries by LWW teams trained at Camp Hopewell near Oxford, Mississippi.

The goal of Solar Under the Sun is to provide training for mission teams from churches and other organizations that can go out and serve as "initiating partners" working with "operating partners" in the developing countries to provide solar power installations for water systems, or schools or clinics etc. The training facilities will be located at Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center near Little Rock, a facility of The Presbytery of Arkansas.

Two meetings have already taken place at Ferncliff for the purpose of launching this exciting new ministry and a mission trip is being planned for a water system with solar power to be installed in hurricane ravaged Haiti. A test solar powered water system, shown in the accompanying picture, has just been installed at Camp Hopewell near Oxford, Mississippi. Training sessions (Clean Water U) will be held at Hopewell this year beginning in March. Next year training for the solar systems will shift to Ferncliff.

The Presbytery of New Covenant is in on the ground floor of this new ministry with a team from ChristChurch, Bellaire and St. John's, Houston involved in the installation and health education for the first Haiti solar powered water system. Persons are needed for the health education component and as translators for Haiti team and other teams are needed to expand the program. Any church interested should contact Rev. Judy Fletcher, Synod Executive at 214-390-1894, fletcher@synodsun.com or to join the Haiti team or for a local contact call John Freeman, 713-776-3548, freeman@rice.edu . It is not too late to register for Spring or Summer Clean Water U sessions - see the LWW website: livingwatersfortheworld.org for details. Welcome to a new way to do God's work in the world.

Marked by Ashes

A prayer by Walter Brueggemann (b. 1933)

Ruler of the Night, Guarantor of the day . . .
This day — a gift from you.
This day — like none other you have ever given, or we have ever received.
This Wednesday dazzles us with gift and newness and possibility.
This Wednesday burdens us with the tasks of the day, for we are already halfway home
halfway back to committees and memos,
halfway back to calls and appointments,
halfway on to next Sunday,
halfway back, half frazzled, half expectant,
half turned toward you, half rather not.

This Wednesday is a long way from Ash Wednesday,
but all our Wednesdays are marked by ashes —
we begin this day with that taste of ash in our mouth:
of failed hope and broken promises,
of forgotten children and frightened women,
we ourselves are ashes to ashes, dust to dust;
we can taste our mortality as we roll the ash around on our tongues.

We are able to ponder our ashness with
some confidence, only because our every Wednesday of ashes
anticipates your Easter victory over that dry, flaky taste of death.

On this Wednesday, we submit our ashen way to you —
you Easter parade of newness.
Before the sun sets, take our Wednesday and Easter us,
Easter us to joy and energy and courage and freedom;
Easter us that we may be fearless for your truth.
Come here and Easter our Wednesday with
mercy and justice and peace and generosity.

We pray as we wait for the Risen One who comes soon.

For over thirty years now, Walter Brueggemann (b. 1933) has combined the best of critical scholarship with love for the local church in service to the kingdom of God. Now a professor emeritus of Old Testament studies at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, Brueggemann has authored over seventy books. Taken from his Prayers for a Privileged People (Nashville: Abingdon, 2008), pp. 27-28.

Ash Wednesday Worship Service, Feb 25, 7 PM

On February 25, at 7:00 pm, you are invited to a powerful
Ash Wednesday service that will include imposition of ashes on the forehead. The imposition of ashes will occur in the courtyard if weather permits. Mark your calendar and plan to attend this powerful service when we offer ourselves to God anew to begin the Lenten season.

During the service we are invited to write a list of our sins which we subsequently will take outdoors into the courtyard. After burning our sins to signify our forgiveness by Christ, participants may come forward for the imposition of ashes. The ashes we use are gathered after the palm branches from last year's Palm Sunday are burned. The ashes are mixed with water from the baptismal font to make a paste. This paste is used by the pastor and liturgists to make the sign of the cross on each of those present while saying the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. An ancient example of one's expressing penitence is found in Job 42:6, when Job says to God: "I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes." Examples are found in other books of the Bible including Jonah 3:6, Matthew 11:21, and Luke 10:13.
