Hospitality Corner

hos●pi●tal●i●ty (n) - Hospitality is making people feel they are being listened to with interest.

Your task is to single-mindedly serve Christ. Do that and you’ll kill two birds with one stone: pleasing the God above you and proving your worth to the people around you. So let’s agree to use all our energy in getting along with each other. Help others with encouraging words; don’t drag them down by finding fault— Romans 14:18-20a Message

Being honest with yourself, on a scale of 1-10, how would you rank your ability to greet everyone you meet with kindness and encouraging words?

Do you show a genuine interest in others?
Do you listen effectively?
Do you value someone’s opinion, even if it’s different than yours?

St. John's Epistle for October 27, 2011

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

Considering the decline in recent years among our churches, you may wonder if your are playing on a winning team or not. Our text this Sunday answers that question with a resounding "Yes! We are!" The sermon this Sunday, Victors United, is based on the heavenly vision of the church universal presented in Revelation 7:9-17. We will celebrate All Saints Day this Sunday and remember those who have gone before us this year. We will include a prayer for church members who have died in the past year. Come get a sense of perspective on who we are and whose we are this Sunday. The message has something to do with the World Series. Come hear the connection this Sunday at 10:30 am.

This Sunday is also our 5th Sunday Anointing Service for Healing. Anyone who has a need for healing — whether physical, mental or emotional — is welcome to come forward for prayer after the sermon. When you come forward for prayer you may specify your prayer request to the pastor or just make a general request for healing.

Trunk or Treat is coming this Sunday, October 30, from 4 to 6 pm in St. John's parking lot. The activities will include face painting, pumpkin toss, cookie decorating and much more! Invite your neighbors and friends. It will be fun for all ages! View and print this Trunk or Treat poster and put it up where you work or shop to invite the community to attend.

Our wish list is dwindling due to the generosity of some anonymous donors to whom we are grateful. The current list includes the following items:

Carpet cleaner machine & supplies ($500 + This would better maintain the new carpet in the     sanctuary and in the other buildings.)

Money for four new Cribs for  Nursery ($800 + New Federal mandatory safety standards for infant cribs will require child care facilities and places of public accommodation to have compliant cribs in their facilities.)

If you are able to contribute or want more information about these projects, contact the church office by phone (713-723-6262).

We are also accepting items for the December 4 Holiday Gift Market's Silent Auction. The proceeds will help defray the costs of church members who make overseas mission trips. The travel for such trips is expensive and by supporting our missionaries for a portion of this cost we support Christ's mission around the world. You may donate singing lessons, a fall flower bed, a home-cooked meal, jellies, a quilt, dinner at a local restaurant, art, gift baskets, jewelry, gift cards, electronics, sports memorabilia, entertainment/sporting event tickets, home décor, children's items ... the list of possibilities goes on and on. Thanks for your creative generosity.

Stewardship Dedication Sunday will be on November 13 and will feature a Catered Barbecue Lunch in McPhail Hall after worship.

You are invited to attend Freda Albert's Memorial Service at 11 am this Saturday, October 29, at Clarewood House, 7400 Clarewood Drive, Houston, Texas  77036.

Celebrating Stewardship: Looking up to God
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. Luke 6:38

I volunteer in the community because I firmly believe that what you are given is in a direct relationship to what you receive. So, if you are blessed with a great deal, you have a lot of giving to do. Also, volunteering is not about what you have but in giving who you are. This lifts up your neighborhood and yourself. ─ Jennifer Durand

St. John's Epistle for October 20, 2011

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

This Sunday during worship we will celebrate the baptism of Lucas Connor Herlitz. Luke will be spoken for by his parents Pam and John Herlitz. His grandmother Mary Herlitz is the elder who will assist with the baptism. Three generations of the Herlitz family will stand before the congregation as the baptismal waters are poured. We give thanks to God for this joyful occasion in the life of our congregation.

Trunk or Treat is coming up on October 30 at 4 pm in our church parking lot. Trunk or Treat features candy, games and a safe place for Fall Fun. Bring the whole family and bring your friends and neighbors!

This is a fun way to introduce folks to our campus and some of our members.

Charlene B. Simmons called to thank us for the card we all signed and sent her. She said that was one of the reasons that she is leaving the rehab facility and going to her apartment sooner than expected. She really appreciated the card and our prayers and thoughts. We miss Charlene and wish her all the best.

Our current wish list includes the following items:
  • Refurbish sign on West Bellfort  ($1000 + We are hosting the community Thanksgiving service next month and our sign needs sprucing up.)
  • New outdoor furniture to replace cement pieces around courtyard ($500 + These would replace some of the aged concrete structures currently in the courtyard.)
  • Carpet cleaner machine & supplies ($500 + This would better maintain the new carpet in the sanctuary and in the other buildings.)
  • Money for four new Cribs for Nursery ($800 +: New Federal mandatory safety standards for infant cribs will require child care facilities and places of public accommodation to have compliant cribs in their facilities.)

If you are able to contribute or want more information about these projects, contact the church office by phone (713-723-6262) or email.

You should have some form of exercise you do each day. Some people like to run. Some people like to walk. I like to ride my bicycle. My main form of exercise is to ride my bike with my leashed dog, Pal, trotting alongside me. He seems to enjoy the ride as much or more than I do. Pal greets everyone with sheer enthusiasm. He reacts with joy to a smiling face or a simple treat. He is wide open to experiencing the wonder of life each moment.

May we each live our lives with more enthusiasm, joy, and openness to experiencing God in each moment. That is my prayer for each one of us today.

Peace,
Jon B.

Freda Albert's memorial service will be at Clarewood on  Saturday, October 29, at 11:00 am.

In September, Braes Interfaith Ministries (BIM) food pantry served 1113 clients (481 children and 625 adults), 22 of whom were homeless. Now that's good stewardship!

As we continue this stewardship season, here is a memorable quote from David Rainwater:

  • Jesus was not the kind of person to say, "Do what I say, not what I do." He taught by example. So if we indeed accept his explanation that to see Him was to see the Father, then how can we, his followers, truly worship God in any other way than to devote our live and resources to carry on his work?
The sermon text for this Sunday is Psalm 96:1-13 and the topic is worship. Liturgy means work of the people. Worship is work. See you in worship as we work together for God's glory this Sunday.

Peace,
Jon B.

St. John's Memorial Service for Delton Harper

You are cordially invited to a Memorial Service for Delton Harper this Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 1:00 pm in the sanctuary of St. John's Presbyterian Church. A reception in Fellowship Hall will follow immediately after the service. Delton and his wife Harriett and their family have been associated with St. John's since the 1960s. For many years she has given faithful and tender care to her husband during his illness. Join me in prayer for Harriett and her family as they mourn Delton's death.

But now thus says the Lord, he who created you,
O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
(Isaiah 43:1-3a, NRSV)

And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8

Giving is automatic with commitment. We are committed to Christ and the Church. All we have is from God through Christ. To not respond to His grace would be a denial. ─ Brad Urquhart

Celebrating Stewardship

Stewardship is thankfulness to God expressed by sharing our financial gifts and serving others. Read below how St. John’s members express their understanding of stewardship in their lives.

Psalms 5:3b reminds us that we should begin each day with thoughts of God and prayers to him. We should look for God’s touch in our daily lives.

I pledge so that a budget can be made, by me as well as the church.
Another reason is that I would have nothing without God in my life and it is the least I can do to share my good fortune. I volunteer because it is a way of sharing the gifts God has given me in carrying out his work. “To whom much is given, much is expected.” My volunteering started when I was in 4th grade and started singing in the choir; I played the organ for church services at age 12 and taught
nursery Sunday school classes when I was in high school. So I have a long history of volunteering in church and hope to continue for years to come. — Mary Hughes

Speaking for myself, I pledge and volunteer because I have been incredibly blessed in my life and I feel a commitment to God to give back blessings to others that I have received. I believe that God is Love and we must reflect this love to others. I feel a compassion for those in need. — John Freeman

I give to the church because it is something I believe is important in my life and the lives around me and I want to support it. I pledge because after serving on the finance and stewardship committee I understand how the budget is designed based on the pledges. I volunteer because I enjoy it and hope to share my many blessings.
— Lindsey Sen-Roy

I tithe to show my love of God, to honor his name and in a special way thank him for the rich blessings he has bestowed upon my life. My small gift added to others allows St John’s to do many wonderful things and help many people near and far, so much more than I could ever do on my own. — Pat Ragan

I give to further God’s commitment to us as a church. I volunteer at Memorial Southwest to bring comfort and peace to patients I see. — Linda Dobbin

Jesus was not the kind of person to say, “Do what I say, not what I do.” He taught by example. So if we indeed accept his explanation that to see Him was to see the Father, then how can we, his followers, truly worship God in any other way than to devote our live and resources to carry on his work? — David Rainwater

St. John's Epistle for October 6, 2011

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

This Sunday you are invited to a pot-luck lunch in Fellowship Hall immediately after worship today. Our Presbytery Executive, Mike Cole, will be our guest speaker as we kick off our Fall Stewardship campaign. Remain after worship and enjoy some good food and fellowship in Fellowship Hall.

Thank you to these families who have contributed to our church wish list: Avery (chairs for Scout Room); Brisch (office furniture in Pam's office); Ehrenstrom (couch and love seat in entryway of Building II); MacAdam (TV for the library); Urquhart (quilt in Session Room).

Our current wish list includes the following items:

  • Refurbish sign on West Bellfort  ($1000 + We are hosting the community Thanksgiving service next month and our sign needs sprucing up.)

  • Replacement phone for sanctuary ($200 + This is the phone by the sink across from the choir room which is useful especially for emergency calls.)

  • Money for four new Cribs for Nursery ($800 total: New Federal mandatory safety standards for infant cribs will require child care facilities and places of public accommodation to have compliant cribs in their facilities.)

If you are able to contribute or want more information about these projects, contact the church office by phone (713-723-6262) or email.

One of our church members, Freda Albert, died recently. Our prayers are with her family as they make arrangements for her funeral.

Here is a fine reflection from Kathie Hartzog as we begin our stewardship season.

Once I was reading the scripture where Jesus was asked whether or not it was right to pay taxes to Caesar. He answered give Caesar what is Caesar's and give God what is God's (Matthew 22:15 - 22). In that moment I realized that all that I have, everything in my life, is God's - my time, my thoughts, my strength, my career. That was the day I began offering the first hour of each day to God in Bible study, journaling, and prayer. Our relationship, my and God's, changed that day. God wants all of me, every hour of every day. And, his mercy and grace sustain me all the times I forget. Thank you, God.

You may want to hear Reggie McNeal when he comes to Houston next week on Friday, October 14, 2011 from 12:30 pm to 3 pm at Saint John's Downtown. Reggie is the author of a book called Missional Renaissance which the Session and some committees have studied this year. Here is more information about that.

Peace,
Jon B.

St. John's In memory of Freda Albert

One of our church members, Freda Albert, died yesterday. Freda joined St. John's in 1975 with her husband, Charles Albert, who died in 1999. Freda has been living at Clarewood Retirement Home for several years. Services will be at Clarewood a few weeks from now at a date to be determined by her family. Beverly and Erin Owings were faithful friends and companions of Freda for the past several years and we remember them in prayer along with Freda's family. As we remember her life, we recall this passage from Job 19:23-27:

O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book!
O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever!
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth;
and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God,
whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another.
My heart faints within me!

Peace,
Pastor Jon

Looking up to God - Stewardship Season Begins

Stewardship is thankfulness to God expressed by sharing our financial gifts and serving others. October and November are Stewardship months at St. John’s. Members make both a financial pledge as well as a pledge of service to carry out the church’s work during the upcoming year. Psalms 5:3b reminds us that we should begin each day with thoughts of God and prayers to him. We should look for God’s touch in our daily lives.

Stewardship season begins on Sunday, October 9, with a congregational potluck and ends on November 13 with our traditional catered barbecue dinner.

Please prayerfully consider your pledge for 2012 and bring your pledge card/volunteer opportunities to Worship on November 13. If you forget, pledge cards and volunteer opportunities sheets will be available in the Narthex.
