St. John's Epistle for October 20, 2011

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

This Sunday during worship we will celebrate the baptism of Lucas Connor Herlitz. Luke will be spoken for by his parents Pam and John Herlitz. His grandmother Mary Herlitz is the elder who will assist with the baptism. Three generations of the Herlitz family will stand before the congregation as the baptismal waters are poured. We give thanks to God for this joyful occasion in the life of our congregation.

Trunk or Treat is coming up on October 30 at 4 pm in our church parking lot. Trunk or Treat features candy, games and a safe place for Fall Fun. Bring the whole family and bring your friends and neighbors!

This is a fun way to introduce folks to our campus and some of our members.

Charlene B. Simmons called to thank us for the card we all signed and sent her. She said that was one of the reasons that she is leaving the rehab facility and going to her apartment sooner than expected. She really appreciated the card and our prayers and thoughts. We miss Charlene and wish her all the best.

Our current wish list includes the following items:
  • Refurbish sign on West Bellfort  ($1000 + We are hosting the community Thanksgiving service next month and our sign needs sprucing up.)
  • New outdoor furniture to replace cement pieces around courtyard ($500 + These would replace some of the aged concrete structures currently in the courtyard.)
  • Carpet cleaner machine & supplies ($500 + This would better maintain the new carpet in the sanctuary and in the other buildings.)
  • Money for four new Cribs for Nursery ($800 +: New Federal mandatory safety standards for infant cribs will require child care facilities and places of public accommodation to have compliant cribs in their facilities.)

If you are able to contribute or want more information about these projects, contact the church office by phone (713-723-6262) or email.

You should have some form of exercise you do each day. Some people like to run. Some people like to walk. I like to ride my bicycle. My main form of exercise is to ride my bike with my leashed dog, Pal, trotting alongside me. He seems to enjoy the ride as much or more than I do. Pal greets everyone with sheer enthusiasm. He reacts with joy to a smiling face or a simple treat. He is wide open to experiencing the wonder of life each moment.

May we each live our lives with more enthusiasm, joy, and openness to experiencing God in each moment. That is my prayer for each one of us today.

Peace,
Jon B.
