St. John's Epistle for June 23, 2011

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

You are invited to the sanctuary tonight, June 23, for a brass concert by Allan Barnhill and Friends at 7:30 pm. This will be worth your time with lots of energy and exuberance. This is an excellent opportunity to invite a friend and come enjoy the Holy Spirit as it flows through the music. Here is a poster about this event that you may view and share with your friends and neighbors to invite them. Thanks to Will for the poster.

This Saturday, you are invited to a Memorial Service for Dick Davis at 1:30 pm in the sanctuary with a reception in Fellowship Hall immediately after the service. Dick and his wife Ernie D are long time members of St. John's who recently moved to the Dallas area. Our prayers and presence will support them as they mourn Dick's death.

Sunday we will celebrate Multi-Cultural Sunday. This celebration will feature lots of music from a brass ensemble to our choir to the choir of the Ghanaian Presbyterian Church who will join us for worship. The Ghanaian Church will also join us for brunch in Fellowship Hall after the service.

In addition, during worship this Sunday we will celebrate the sacrament of baptism not one time but three times as each of the Jacobsen children will be baptized. Carli and Aaron Jacobsen invite you to join them for the joyous occasion of the baptism of their children Ava Ann Jacobsen, Jonas Keith Jacobsen and Amelia Elizabeth Jacobsen.

This Sunday afternoon, June 26, the Chapelwood United Methodist Choir will present a choral concert at 3 pm in the sanctuary. Our own Mark Swindler is a featured soloist. Mark your calendar and bring a friend.

And that's not all for this Sunday!  On Sunday evening we begin Vacation Bible School (VBS) and it will continue each evening next week through Thursday, June 30. Each evening begins with a light supper at 5:45 pm in Fellowship Hall. This year's "Galactic Blast" will include Bible study classes for all ages, and include music and crafts for elementary aged children. This is for all ages including adults. If you are wondering if it will be worth your time, check out this promo video about our VBS theme: "Galactic Express." I hope I can get my hands on some of those 3D Scripture Treasures! Our young cadets will voyage into outer space praising God. Through daily missions, they will see space like never before, gain a new appreciation of God's creation, and learn easy "green" earth tips to practice at home. Our older cadets will be seeking intergalactic scripture truths to take home and cherish. Regardless of your age, here is your VBS mission: Find and bring a friend.

We have some celebrations and concerns. After dealing with cancer for almost two years, George Dobbin has received "All Clear!" results from recent tests.

Louise Cherry has some health concerns that have arisen in the past week. Keep her in prayer as she undergoes tests and considers treatments.

The family of Alex Bornhauser, grandparents were charter members of St. John's.  Alex, 28,  lost his two year battle with a brain tumor last week.

Mary Sterner reports that our recent youth mission trip to Guatemala was a great success in every respect. Here is a write up about our mission trip by Philip Beisswenger, a mission worker serving with the Presbyterian church in Guatemala.

We are blessed to be blessed as we are with a church family that encourages us when we are down and lifts us up when we are low. I am grateful to each of you for your friendship. We have something that many people lack: A people and a place to call our spiritual home on this earth. Let us invite others into our spiritual habitat. Our doors are open. Let's invite others to come inside. Then we'll all leave and go back into the community and city to serve our risen Lord.

I will leave you with this blessing: "The Lord bless you and keep you--the Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you; the Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace." (Numbers 6:24-26)

Peace of Christ be with you,
Pastor Jon

Note from St. John's Presbyterian Church about the death of Dick Davis

A long time church member, Dick Davis, died on Sunday morning in Dallas. He had recently moved there with his wife, Ernie D, in order to be closer to his family. There will be a burial service in Dallas and a memorial service at St. John's Presbyterian Church a couple of weeks from now. More details about the memorial service will be forthcoming as the plans develop. In the meantime, let us keep the Davis family in prayer this week and in the weeks to come.

Peace of Christ be with you,
Pastor Jon

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord,

the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only,

but unto all them also that love his appearing.

St. John's Epistle for June 9, 2011

Dear  family and friends of St. John's,

Tomorrow my family and I will move to 5042 Wigton, 77096, which is a 4 minute walk from the church. This will put us 10 minutes closer to our children's schools at Pin Oak Middle School and Challenge Early High School which in on the campus of Southwest Houston Community College just off the 610 Loop. After moving on Friday, I will be preaching on Sunday, then on vacation next week as we unpack so I will not be sending out an Epistle next week.

Thank you to those who have been praying for this to work out for us. Things have happened along the way that let us know that God was working in this situation. For example, we were going to have to move out earlier to accommodate the buyer's schedule but due to an unforeseen development (there God was working) we got to renegotiate our move out date to the one that fit our schedule. If we hadn't been able to do this, our move would have required moving twice. We appreciate everyone who was there for us during this transition. We also appreciate Carli Jacobsen who was our realtor. We are really going to miss Carli and her family in our church and in this community.

In the process of moving from one house to another, I am forced to take inventory of my material possessions and this has spilled over into an evaluation of where we are as a congregation at this point four years into my ministry here. My vision for St. John's consists of making disciples through praying together and sharing our lives in a deep and meaningful manner. This is happening now but it is going to increase exponentially in the next few years. God is doing something new in our midst. We are in the early stages of God's new work here. My best reading of our current situation in this congregation is that we will continue to grow in our relationships with Christ and one another. Our spiritual lives will be filled with Holy Spirit and our overflowing cup will spill over into the community and draw people to the Christ in us. I sense the early stages of such growth happening now. There has been a positive shift in this congregation in the past several months. There is a slightly more upbeat energy level. Expectations are increasing. New ideas are flowing. Relationships are renewing.

This is what is happening right now at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Houston. We are now in the beginning stages of living into God's future for this congregation. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in Christ's kingdom work here and anticipate nurturing us into further growth in the months and years to come. Christ is moving in our midst and we are witnesses of these things that are happening in and through us. Such is the mystical nature of life in the body of Christ, the church. As an angel said to a group of distraught women when they didn't find Jesus in the tomb, so I say to you in regard to Christ's body called St. John's Presbyterian Church: "Don't be afraid ... Come and see ... Now I have told you." (Matthew 28:5-7)

We look forward to welcoming some new members during worship this Sunday. Since this Sunday is Pentecost Sunday we will receive the Pentecost Offering.

Our church website is experiencing some technical difficulties which are being addressed. In the meantime, you may use our church blog site for the latest update on all things St. John's at http://sjpresby.blogspot.com.

The Session has called a congregational meeting on Sunday, June 26 to elect an elder to finish Aaron Jacobsen's term on Session. The Nominating Committee will nominate Mary Sterner to complete Aaron's final months as an Elder in the class of 2011. Nominations from the floor may also be accepted provided the person being nominated has agreed to serve if elected.

Our Youth Mission Group is in Guatemala this week. They left Monday and will return Saturday. We have heard from them and they are doing well. Keep these participants in prayer as they engage in mission projects from painting a church to leading children's activities to adult Bible studies with a little time thrown in for sight seeing as well. Here are the adults: Mary Sterner, Aaron Jacobsen, Mary Gaber, and Deborah Ganelin; and here are the youth participants: Brendan Ehrenstrom, Jacob Ehrenstrom, Patrick Harrel, Christianna Johnson, Gabriel McGuire, Isabel Mulder, and Gabrielle Williams. They are there for only a week but our church has a continuous presence there through our denomination's partners in mission in Guatemala.

Our mission efforts this summer extend from Guatemala to Uganda. These items are needed for the Lulwanda Children's Home in Uganda: Individual white glue bottles; glue sticks; and children's scissors (eg: Fiskars). Please deliver them to the church office before June 19. Kathie Hartzog will hand deliver the items to Uganda. She will be flying out on July 1.

We look forward to two forthcoming concerts in our sanctuary. On Thursday, June 23, Allan Barnhill will lead a Brass Concert at 7:30 pm. Then on Sunday, June 26, the Chaplewood United Methodist Choir will present a choral concert at 3 pm in the sanctuary. Mark your calendar and bring a friend.

Sunday, June 19, Rev. Linda Herron will be preaching as I take a week off to unpack and move in our new house. I appreciate Linda's willingness and her leadership and preaching skills that she brings to the pulpit in my absence.

May the Lord be with you this weekend as we anticipate all the energy and wonder of Pentecost Sunday. I hope to see you in worship this Sunday as we welcome new members and then at the brunch after worship. Kristi Edmondsond will prepare the brunch so I know you will want to stay for the fellowship and fine dining in the Fellowship Hall after worship this Sunday.

Peace of Christ be with you,

P    Pastor Jon B.

St. John's Epistle for June 2, 2011

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

Last Sunday we had a big participation in the Anointing Service for Healing. I like the way that service on every 5th Sunday reminds us that we all are broken and in need of repair. During his lifetime Jesus was known as a healer and He still is today.

This Sunday we will be commissioning our Youth Mission Trip participants (both adult and youth) to Guatemala and Kathie Hartzog for her mission trip to Uganda. St. John's is known as a mission oriented congregation and these people are carrying our mission out into the world. While Kathie departs in July, the Youth Mission Trip begins this Monday and continues throughout the week from June 6-11. Keep these participants in prayer as they engage in mission projects from painting a church to leading children's activities to adult Bible studies with a little time thrown in for sight seeing as well. Here are the adults: Mary Sterner, Aaron Jacobsen, Mary Gaber, and Deborah Ganelin; and here are the youth participants: Brendan Ehrenstrom, Jacob Ehrenstrom, Patrick Harrel, Christiana Johnson, Gabriel McGuire, Isabel Mulder, and Gabrielle Williams.

Summer brunches begin this Sunday. Stop by McPhail Hall after worship service for some good food and great fellowship during the months of June, July and August. St. John's Fellowship Committee will be serving the first brunch this Sunday on June 5. Come and bring a friend.

On Sunday June 5 after church in room 210, come and learn about the Mustard Seed 2011 summer project. At this meeting the $100 "seed" money will be distributed.

The Nominating Committee also meets after worship this Sunday and I will be meeting with them so I won't get to visit with you during the brunch. Speaking of visiting, you may phone or email me or drop by the church office when you want to visit. I value hearing what is on your heart and mind in terms of your relationship with God or your celebrations or concerns about our congregation or the church at large or just life itself in all its glory and disorder.

The Wired Word Class will continue to meet each Sunday during the Summer. Beginning this Sunday, June 5, we will move across the hall from the Pastor's office to Room 203. Newcomers or "drop ins" are welcome each week and this class works well for occasional attenders, since each class stands alone and focuses on a different topic of interest that has appeared in the news media that week. If your usual class is not meeting this Summer, let me know and I'll put you on the Wired Word mailing list and email you each Thursday with the topic for the forthcoming class that Sunday.

Lois's memorial plaque in the columbarium was installed today thanks to Bob. Session approved a Memorial Fund in honor of Lois Stowell to purchase a set of banners for the Sanctuary. If you would like to make a contribution, please deliver your check to the church office with Memorial Fund/Lois Stowell on the memo line.

Mark your calendar  on June 26-30 from 6-8 pm for for this year's Vacation Bible School. The "Galactic Blast" VBS will include Bible study classes for all ages, music and crafts for elementary aged children and a light supper served at 5:45 pm. Registration forms may be found in the Narthex, in McPhail Hall during summer brunches and in Building 2 on the VBS bulletin board. Neighbors, friends, and relatives are invited. Please complete and deliver the registration form to the church office or Mary Sterner.

Peace of Christ be with you,
Pastor Jon

Mustard Seed Meeting

On Sunday June 5 after church in room 210, come and learn about the Mustard Seed 2011 summer project. At this meeting the $100 "seed" money will be distributed.

The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown, it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that birds of the air come and make nests in its branches. Matthew 13:31-32
