Where in the World is Steven Leach?

Steven is serving as an ordained minister of the Word and Sacrament at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Cape Town, South Africa. St. Andrew’s is the oldest Presbyterian church in Cape Town. In addition to delivering the word and sacrament, he is actively engaged in a juvenile prison ministry and participates in a hospital chaplaincy group. He visits the prison weekly, working on building relationships with the inmates, and visits the hospital every other week, or as needed. He is also serving on a committee with Presbytery of the Cape, which is meeting monthly to write the guidelines of worship for the presbytery. Steven’s visa into South Africa shows that he is acting as a voluntary missionary in the country. His ministry in South Africa is being sponsored by First Presbyterian Church, San Antonio, with additional financial support from family and friends.

Steven is focusing his ministry on reconciliation. There is still much healing to be done in that country as the people continue to deal with post-Apartheid issues. He has been volunteering at the Institute for Memories, which is recording the individual histories of citizens who lived through Apartheid.

If you would like to follow his ministry, you can visit his blog:
http://reconcilingwork.posterous.com.

He tries to post at least every Sunday and includes his sermon on the Sundays that he preaches. If you subscribe to the blog, an e-mail is sent to you when he posts. The last time I checked, the site had 6 subscribers, half of which were family. You can support his ministry by joining and reading the blog!

Hurricane Preparations

Hurricane Irene reminds us that this is hurricane season in Houston. Below are some hurricane preparation tips from the latest version of The Beacon. We offer prayers for protection for people this weekend for people who live in or own property on the East Coast.

Are you ready? — Hurricane Season is Here!

2011 Hurricane season is here! The most important thing you can do at this time of the year is create a hurricane survival kit. The basics supplies you should stock include water and food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and supplies and important documents. Keep the items that you would most likely need in an easy-to-move container— suggested items are a large, covered trash container, camping backpack, or a duffle bag. These supplies can be used during an evacuation and/or sheltering in place. Remember once disaster hits, you won't have time to shop or search for supplies. The following lists will help you assemble your supplies.

Food

• At least 1 (one) gallon of water per day per person for 3-5 days

• Non-perishable dry or canned food: ready-to-eat meats, fruits, vegetables, soups, juices and milk

• High energy snack foods: protein or fruit bars, trail mix, peanut butter and crackers

• Comfort foods: nuts, cookies, sweetened cereals, instant coffee, tea and hard candy

• Salt, pepper and sugar

• Vitamins

First aid

• A kit with bandages, gauze pads, tape, anti-bacterial ointment, hydrogen peroxide, thermometer, anti-diarrhea medication, laxative, aspirin or non-aspirin pain relievers, syrup of ipecac, pain medication, antacids, and tweezers

• Latex gloves

• Toilet paper and personal hygiene items

• Paper towels and facial tissues

• Hand sanitizer (Waterless soap saves water for drinking and cooking.)

• Mosquito/insect repellent and sun screen

• Special needs items such as prescription medications (minimum two-week supply), eye glasses, contact lens solutions, hearing aid batteries and other personal items

Clothing

• Clothing (at least one complete change of clothes per person including one long sleeve shirt)

• Bedding (blankets, pillows and sleeping bags)

• Sturdy work shoes or boots

• Raincoat, hat and gloves

• Sunglasses

Tools and Supplies

• Eating and cooking utensils, paper plates and cups

• Manual can opener

• Liquid detergent and household chlorine bleach

• Plastic bucket and lid

• Aluminum Foil and plastic wrap

• Zip bags (all sizes)

• Matches or lighters in a waterproof container

• Battery-operated radio and extra batteries

• Flashlights (one per person) and extra batteries

• Scissors and assorted safety pins

• Duct tape (useful for clean-up or patching leaks)

• Assorted screwdrivers and screws, pliers, hammer and nails plus shut-off tool for gas and water lines

• Plastic sheeting

• Shovel, utility knife, hatchet and crowbar

• Whistle (one per person)

• Heavy duty plastic garbage bags

• Cell phone, cell phone batteries and extra chargers (Note: Include a telephone that plugs directly into a wall jack.)

• Also pack books, games, puzzles, cards, notebook paper and pencils.

Important Documents

• Insurance & medical records, passports, deeds, bank account numbers, credit card account numbers and companies, inventory of valuable household items, family records (Social Security cards, birth, marriage and death certificates), etc.

• Copies of important keys

• Backup of computer files (on a CD, DVD, USB drive, etc.)

• List of important contact phone numbers stored in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag.

Sheltering-in-Place

Shelter-in-place means occupants remain inside their home or other building for increased safety and security, weathering the storm and the storm's aftermath without evacuating. This means having food, water, and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last for a minimum of three days.

Needed Shelter-in-Place items

• Disaster kit supplies

• AM/FM/Weather band radio with extra batteries

• Flashlight and extra batteries

• Corded phone

• Permanent markers and paper

• Dust masks

• Carbon monoxide detector

• Plastic sheeting

• Duct tape

• Whistle

How to Shelter-in-Place at home:

• Close and lock all windows and exterior doors.

• Close the window shades, blinds, or curtains.

• Turn off all fans, heating and air conditioning systems.

• Close the fireplace damper.

• Store drinking water in clean bathtubs, sinks, jugs, bottles and cooking utensils. TIP: First sterilize bathtubs and sinks with bleach, then flush with water to remove bleach.

• Go to an interior room without windows that's above ground level.

• Bring your family disaster supplies kits with you.

• Also bring your pets with you, and be sure to bring additional food and water supplies for them.

• Use duct tape and plastic sheeting (heavier than food wrap) to seal all cracks around the door and any vents into the room.

Remember: Your single greatest information source before, during and after an emergency will be your battery-powered radio.

Sheltering-in-place questions and answers

What does bleach do?

When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant.

Or in an emergency you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops from a medicine dropper or 1/8 teaspoon of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Stir and let stand for 30 minutes. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.

What type of radio is best?

An AM/FM/Weather band radio that can be powered by batteries AND plugged into an electrical outlet is your best choice for an emergency. However, any battery-powered radio will do.

Why a carbon monoxide detector?

Deadly carbon monoxide from a generator outside your house can filter in through vents or open windows. You would never know it was happening without an inexpensive detector.

Why a corded phone?

A corded phone can be used during a power outage, since it doesn't plug into an electrical outlet. The long cord means you can take it to the safest part of your house.

Why plastic sheeting?

It can be used with duct tape to seal doors, windows, and air vents at home, and offers some protection from contaminated air, hazardous materials and bad weather.

Is my food safe to eat?

Always keep meat, poultry, fish, and eggs refrigerated at or below 40° F and frozen food at or below 0° F. This is difficult when the power is out. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if half full) if the door remains closed. Fill the freezer and refrigerator with water bottles to occupy more space. You also can wrap the refrigerator/freezer in a blanket to keep it insulated and preserve foods longer.

St. John's Epistle for August 25, 2011

We appreciate Allen Barnhill and the Brass Ensemble who led us in worship music last Sunday!

This Sunday morning will be full with Rally Day at 9 am in Fellowship Hall and Blessing of the Backpacks during worship. We will also have a congregational meeting during worship
to elect a replacement for Aaron Jacobsen on the Session's Class of 2011. See the links below for more info about these and other events. Kristi Edmondsond is cooking this Sunday for our final Summer Brunch immediately after the service!

Here are a few links of interest.

*Rally Day is this Sunday!

*Blessing of the Backpacks is this Sunday!

*Adult Sunday School Classes!

There are five adult classes to choose from! We welcome a New Adult Sunday School Class that will meet in the library during church school each Sunday. The class will reflect on the book An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith by Barbara Brown Taylor. Kathie Hartzog will facilitate the class discussion. All are welcome to this or any of our classes.

Free the Slaves President Kevin Bales was on the radio show 'State of Affairs' on Louisville, Kentucky's NPR station WFPL this week, talking about modern-day slavery. In this interview, Bales discussed the distinction between human trafficking and slavery, saying "human trafficking is simply a process by which people are brought into a situation of slavery." But, he continues, human trafficking victims "are only a smaller part of the slaves in the world." He also discussed the alarmingly low cost of slaves today. At the height of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, back in the mid 1800′s, the average cost of a slave in the U.S. was the equivalent of $40 to $50 thousand dollars in today's money. Today, the average cost of a human being is a mere $90. There are more slaves today than ever before in history—an estimated 27 million. Human Trafficking Awareness month begins next week.

It rained at the church this morning!! Thank you, Lord, for sending some rain our way!

Have a blessed weekend.

Peace,
Pastor Jon

Night Circle News

Ladies - Fall is approaching, so it is time for our Women's Bible Study, the tradition we all know as "Circle". Since the world has changed, so change has come to the Night Circle. It was our custom to meet on Tuesday nights, but we have lost some of our members to the Day Circle, so not only would we like to recruit new disciples, we are also searching for a new meeting time.

We met on Tuesday nights originally as working women, but we are very aware that life keeps us all busy, so we are looking for a time that will be accessible to as many people as possible. Bearing this in mind, we would like all interested parties to meet with "Circle 4" on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at The Egg and I Restaurant*, 4938 Beechnut St., in Meyerland at 12:30pm.

Our study this year focuses on The Beatitudes, so please join us in food and fellowship as we embark on this year's journey of blessedness!

*This is a breakfast/brunch/lunch establishment, therefore, you can have anything from an omelet to a hamburger: and, since it's after church, we'll all be hungry

St. John's Epistle for August 18, 2011

Dear church family and friends of St. John's,

Thanks to Rev. Linda Herron for preaching and providing pastoral duties while I was away. It's good to be back feeling renewed, refreshed and ready to move forward. I look forward to catching up with you and how your summer has been. This Sunday we are blessed to have Allen Barnhill's brass ensemble accompany us during worship with brunch after the service. I hope to see you there.

Here are links to updates about our life together and mission in Christ.

NPR interviewed Trees for Houston who said that we are now in an exceptional drought and trees will begin dying if it doesn't change or people don't water them. Trees for Houston can't keep up with all the trees they've planted and are encouraging people to water trees in esplanades and other public spaces near them. The Trees for Houston representative advised: "Punch a small hole in a 5-gallon bucket. Fill it up, put it by your tree and it drips out. You'll get more water percolating right where you need it in a more efficient way, than a broad lawn sprinkler system." In the meantime, we continue to pray for an end to this dreadful drought.

Peace,
Jon B.

Centering Prayer Workshop Sept 11 at 4:30 pm

We will resume our Centering Prayer Group on Sunday, September 11, at 4:30 pm in Pastor Jon's Office. Newcomers are welcome.

At 5 pm we will have an organizational meeting for the fall for newcomers and all participants.

Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship.

Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer. Rather, it adds depth of meaning to all prayer and facilitates the movement from more active modes of prayer — verbal, mental or affective prayer — into a receptive prayer of resting in God. Centering Prayer emphasizes prayer as a personal relationship with God and as a movement beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Him.

The source of Centering Prayer, as in all methods leading to contemplative prayer, is the Indwelling Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The focus of Centering Prayer is the deepening of our relationship with the living Christ. The effects of Centering Prayer are ecclesial, as the prayer tends to build communities of faith and bond the members together in mutual friendship and love.

For more information about Centering Prayer visit contemplativeoutreach.org or attend the workshop in the pastor's office at St. John's on Sunday, September 11, at 4:30 pm. Newcomers are welcome.

Nothing is more beautiful than the uniqueness
that God has created.

… You don't have to create the beauty
– you've got the beauty.

… You don't have to create the freedom
– you've got it.

… You don't have to create the image of God in you
– you have it.
… You don't have to win over God's love
– you have more than you know what to do with.

If you would like to follow his ministry, you can visit his blog: http://reconcilingwork.posterous.com.

He tries to post at least every Sunday and includes his sermon on the Sundays that he preaches. If you subscribe to the blog, an e-mail is sent to you when he posts. The last time I checked, the site had 6 subscribers, half of which were family. You can support his ministry by joining and reading the blog!

Confessing the Beatitudes” by Margaret Aymer is a unique and exciting 9-month study presented by Horizons magazine continuing the more-than-100 year tradition of Bible studies produced by women in the Presbyterian Church.

Join us Tuesday, September 6, at 9:30 am, in McPhail Hall with St. John’s Presbyterian Women. There will be a short Association business meeting at 10 am followed by an overview of this year’s Bible study by Rev. Rhonda Detenbeck. Mustard Seed Project Update

Give thanks to the Lord for all that has been accomplished so far in the Mustard Seed Projects! Wow! How our faith is growing and has grown this summer. Clearly, nothing is impossible if we have faith even as small as a mustard seed. Imagination and energy by our project leaders have opened the doors for a fabulous effort this summer in impacting the lives of people in our community. There is still time to jump in and contribute items to the many wonderful projects. Those especially needing attention are theDiaper Project and Pet Supply Collections. Please see below. Of course, donations are deeply appreciated for any of the other projects. Collection boxes are located outside Vivian’s office. Projects will be completed by the end of August. We pray that the recipients of these projects will experience the love and comfort of Jesus Christ, and may God be glorified by all of these efforts.

Andra Mulder is collecting diapers for the infant residents of the Star of Hope shelter. The shelter is in urgent need of diapers (all sizes). As a record number of women and their children (including babies) seek refuge in shelters, the Star of Hope is assisting by providing diapers to the mothers. Please help by donating one or more packages of diapers in any size toward this compassionate effort.

Jennifer Durand is collecting money and pet supplies for Pet Patrol, a non-profit organization dedicated to taking care of pets owned by the elderly and those affected by severe illness. Items requested are: Dry and can food (for cats and dogs), flea prevention, dog shampoo, cat litter, pet treats, collars, and leashes. A drop box to collect these items is located next to Vivian's office.

Phyllis and John Freeman are buying and collecting pet food for Interfaith Ministries “Animeals” program. As you may know, Interfaith Ministries sponsors the Meals on Wheels program for some of our home-bound elder population in Houston. These contributions of pet food, money and pet food coupons will aid in this effort to help feed this population’s pets.

Betty Robinson and Lynne Parsons Austin are collecting newathletic shoes for students at Shearn Elementary (Pre-K through 5th graders). Buy a pair of kid's athletic shoes and donate it (or money) to this group of children who might not otherwise be able to afford a new pair of shoes. This small gesture will allow them to start the school year with excitement and self-confidence as they take the next step into their future.

Michael Rodgers and Lynne Parsons Austin are collectinggently used clothing for women at Sally's House. Sally's House is a transitional shelter for single women who have already completed an alcohol/drug detoxification program. This shelter provides a safe and compassionate environment for the next phase of their recovery where they must work or attend school to learn a skill. They are especially in need of appropriate clothing for work. Look through your closets and donate gently used women's outfits, dresses, pants and blouses. All sizes acceptable.

Shannon DeSouza and Blake Modlin are collecting coupons for food goods to benefit Braes Interfaith Ministries (BIM). Look through papers, magazines, ads and collect those coupons that will stretch the dollar for purchase of non-perishable foods for the food pantry at BIM. A drop box to collect these coupons is located in Vivian's office.

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20.
