St. John's Epistle for May 24, 2012

Dear friends of God,

Hank McNally died today and his memorial service will be held in the sanctuary this Tuesday, May 29, at 2 pm, with a reception following in Fellowship Hall. Hank and his family were active leaders in St. John's during Rev. Maynard Smith's pastorate. Joyce and Hank were instrumental in starting The Company Onstage which is now housed at Westbury Square and started in our Scout Room. They will both be interned in our columbarium. Our prayers are with Hank's children Matt and Maureen and their families as they prepare for his memorial service.

This Sunday is Pentecost Sunday! Come and wear red as we remember and celebrate the birth of Christ's church. The sermon text is Acts 2:1-21. Here is an audio recording of last Sunday's sermon. The children's choir sounded great and we celebrated them and their leaders as they concluded the year. We are grateful to all the parents, children, and the adult leaders: Rebecca Amador, Shirley Boyd, and Kyra Noons. We will receive the Pentecost Offering this Sunday. Forty percent of that offering will stay in our congregation to be used to finance our Mustard Seed Projects. Be thinking of how you could multiply $100 by ten fold in an outreach ministry to children in our community. Or be thinking of how much you will give to the Pentecost Offering to support such creative ministries by our members of our congregation.

Many graduations are taking place this time of year. This morning I attended the Small Steps graduation. Small Steps is a ministry supported by our church and some of the key leaders are members of our church including Kathie Hartzog and Evan Harrel. Today Evan stepped down as Director of Small Steps after eight very productive years in that position. We are proud of Evan for his work at Small Steps. We are also proud of Kathie who will remain on the staff there as well as members such as Ann and Suzette and others who volunteer at Small Steps. May the Lord continue to use our congregation as we provide creative ministries that improve the lives of children in this city and around the world.

Your looking forward to children's laughter on Pentecost Sunday pastor,
JON BURNHAM
