Blood Drive - June 7

It is said the difference between sympathy and compassion is that the one who sympathizes sees and feels but does nothing. The one who has compassion sees, feels and then does something about the need.

Jesus asks us to help the sick, and giving blood is one way that even a non-medical person can render a vital medical service. Donated blood saves lives!

Pentecost Offering

Image of the 2009 Pentecost Offering Poster

The Pentecost Offering is traditionally received on the day of Pentecost (May 31, 2009). It provides a direct way to meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults. Congregations are encouraged to keep 40 percent of the Offering to support ministry with children at risk in their communities.

The General Assembly’s portion (60 percent) provides leadership development opportunities for Presbyterian youth and young adults and supports children-at-risk programs at the national level. Since 1998, Presbyterians of all ages have raised over $7 million for these ministries that benefit younger members of God’s family.

In March, all congregations will receive a mailing of Pentecost Offering materials. Additional materials to promote the 2008 Offering can be ordered from PDS at (800) 524-2612 or downloaded from this site.

Questions about the Offering?

Name Tag Sunday - June 7

On Sunday, June 7, St. John’s will hold it’s first "Nametag Sunday." As you walk down the walkway to worship that morning the Evangelism Ministry Team asks that you stop at the table and write your name on the tags provided. Please wear the nametag at worship and during brunch.

Everyone get nervous when they have to address someone they don’t know. Everyone also gets embarrassed when they talk to a person they have known for a while but can’t remember their name. BUT… if the person is wearing a nametag, all nervousness and embarrassment can be avoided. Nametags have the power to "introduce" because the nametag serves as an icebreaker.

On Nametag Sunday, the Evangelism Ministry Team asks you to approach someone you usually do not greet with a friendly hello, say their name, and see how their face lights up. Remember a person’s name is the sweetest sound a person can hear and saying their name makes them feel welcome and appreciated. Stay and hold a conversation, learn about their interests, and hear their life story.

Mustard Seed Project

Think about the child who cannot afford school books, tutoring classes, or guitar lessons. Imagine the child who does not receive dental care, immunization shots, or medication for depression because his or her parents cannot afford them.

With so many socio-economic issues facing children in the Houston community today, St. John’s would like to empower its members to meet children’s needs and provide a lasting impact on the community. As a result, and as an extension of the Justice for All Children speaker series, Outreach Ministry Team has developed St. John’s 2009 Mustard Seed Project.

For the Mustard Seed Project, several St. John’s members will be granted $100 each to serve an at-risk child, or several children, in his/her community through acts of compassion. "Acts of compassion" can vary from purchasing needed school supplies and healthcare to providing new learning opportunities and legal counsel. The activities in which children are served is determined solely by the participant.

Subject to being awarded a grant, participation is limited to the first 10 who sign up. A sign-up sheet will be located in the narthex through May 31. The 90 day program will begin on June 1, and end on August 31, 2009. A kick-off meeting will be held after church on May 31 in room 205 for all project participants.

Special Education Advocacy, Wednesday, May 6: Everyone is invited to learn about becoming a volunteer advocate, partnering with at-risk children and their families and walking with them through the special educational process. Please meet in Room 205 at 10 am to learn more. Contact Suzette Harrel or Ann Hardy for more information.

Life Line Screening, Building One: Have you suffered a broken bone in your hip or spine? Do you feel as if you are getting shorter? If you answer “yes” to either of these questions, you may want to consider being screened for the risk of osteoporosis. We are pleased to offer a Life Line Screening preventive health event, Saturday, May 9, that can be used to detect just such a risk. The osteoporosis screening is not only for women.
