St. John's Epistle for January 19, 2012

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

The sermon scripture this week from Mark 1:14-20 is the story of Jesus calling Simon and Andrew away from their nets and even their father to come and follow Jesus. In calling the disciples Jesus does not ask them to add one more item to their to do list. He invites them into new ways of being. The sermon titleis Our Unfinished Future: What do we leave and who do we follow?

For a good look into our current ministries, here is a link to the Jan/Feb Beacon.

In December 2011 BIM (Braes Interfaith Ministries) food pantry served 776 clients (328 children and 448 adults), 18 of whom were homeless. Each of the 12 member churches of Braes Interfaith Ministries has a month in which it is designated to provide food. January is St. John's month to provide food for BIM. Grocery sacks with a list of suggestions can be picked up on the coffee table by the church office. Please return the sacks of food during any Sunday in January. Note: toiletries (shampoo, toothpaste and deodorant) are always needed. Cash donations are also appreciated. BIM can buy $27 worth of canned food from the Houston Food Bank for every dollar donated. Please write BIM on the memo line of your check.

Ben Carretin passed along a need for donated clothes for some patients that lost greatly in a recent flood and since then, another in an apartment fire. Speak to Ben before the Sunday service at coffee and he will gladly accept whatever you may have for them.

On January 29 during the 10:30 am service, we will have an Anointing Service for Healing. Anyone who has a need for healing — whether physical, mental or emotional — is welcome to come forward for prayer after the sermon.

May the Lord bless you and your family and keep you healthy and strong for God's service to a world that is in great need of God's tender care.

Peace,
Pastor Jon
