Rev. Steven Leach

St. John's welcomes Steven Leach to our pulpit, Sunday January 26.

After an internship in a suburb of Johannesburg while in seminary, Rev. Leach felt called to South Africa. In January of 2012 he was called to minister in association with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Capetown, being supported by First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio. Steven was active in the juvenile prison ministry and as a hospital chaplain among numerous other responsibilities.

Rev. Leach hopes to return to Capetown and continue his ministry  based on reconciliation. He submitted a grant proposal to help fund his next plan, a non-profit ministry to train community leaders to use dialogue
in resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence.

Steven is the son of Jeanne Leach and grandson of Thalia and Don Bunnell.

Souper Bowl of Caring - February 2

“Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.”
                                  -SouperBowl of Caring Founding Prayer

One Church-with one prayer in 1990-has now grown to 5,221 churches nationwide, raising $2,841,488 cash and food items collected in 2013. St. John’s will join with congregations across America on Sunday, February 2.

It’s simple.

St. John’s youth will take up a collection as you leave church, asking each person to contribute $1.00. (Of course, larger gifts are certainly accepted.)

It’s local.

All proceeds from the collection will be donated to Braes Interfaith Ministries (BIM).

It’s a celebration.

Everyone is invited to gather in McPhail Hall after worship for homemade soups by the talented chefs of St. John’s

Join the SouperBowl of Caring and
experience God’s love in action.

Run For A Reason

Dear Friends,

January 19th is almost here. On that day I am running in the Aramco Half Marathon in January in support of Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services. PHCAS provides housing, counseling and care for children and families - particularly single parents - from domestic problem situations. PCHAS is building housing for seven families on our church property. You can donate to PCHAS on my "RUN FOR A REASON" web page.

To donate, go to the web site texas.pchas.org ... and scroll down to the Houston Chevron Marathon/RUN FOR A REASON logo/button at the very bottom of the page. Click on this and it will take you to the PCHAS/Run for a Reason web page where you will see a list of fundraisers scrolling on the right side. Click on my name and this will take you to my web site where you can donate to support PCHAS.

I am 2/3 of the way to my goal.
Many thanks to those of you who have already donated.

Souper Bowl of Caring - Sunday, February 2

St. John’s youth invite everyone to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring, a youth-led movement to fight hunger and poverty.

The Souper Bowl of Caring was created from a single prayer: “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.” The Rev. Brad Smith spoke these words as a seminary intern at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina in 1990. In 1990, 22 churches participated and collected $5,700 for local food relief agencies. In 2013, 8,163 groups participated and collected $7,510,081. St. John’s was one of those groups!
St. John’s vision is that each person attending church on Souper Bowl Sunday will contribute $1.00, but larger gifts will be accepted. In addition to taking a collection, the youth will be serving homemade soups made by St. John’s members in McPhail Hall.
All proceeds from the collection and the soup donations will be directed to Braes Interfaith Ministries (BIM).

If you are interested in learning more or have any questions, please contact Mary Sterner at mary2d@yahoo.com.
