St. John's Epistle for November 24, 2010
Dear church members and friends of St. John's,
This year Advent will begin on November 28. Join us for Hanging of the Greens during the morning worship service this Sunday. We will joyously decorate the Sanctuary in preparation for the Advent season and then celebrate the baptism of Sabrina Sen-Roy. After worship, Lindsey invites everyone to Fellowship Hall for a reception in honor of her daughter's baptism.
Presbyterian Youth Fellowship (PYF) will not meet this Sunday, November 28 as they are on Thanksgiving Break. For questions about PYF you may email Mary Sterner or call her at (713) 723-6262.
If you need a pledge card for 2011, cards may be found on the table in the Narthex.
Thank you to everyone who made the Holiday Gift Market a huge success last Sunday! We raised over $10,000. More details on the money will be forthcoming. In the meantime, here are some photos Jana took at the Holiday Gift Mart: http://picasaweb.google.com/burjon/StJohnSHolidayMart112110. After you click on the link you may click on "Slideshow" above the uppermost left photo to view a large version of each photo or click them one by one. As you may see, Santa was quite busy last Sunday.
The Caring Committee needs holiday cookie tins for delivering cookies to St. John's shut-ins. They will be packed on Sunday, December 12. Please bring your tins to the church office.
Members and friends of all ages are invited to celebrate at our Advent Family Festival next Sunday, December 5, at 5 pm. Activities will include Advent wreaths, arts and crafts, decorated bags for Meals on Wheels, and a Christmas sing-a-long. Soup will be served for dinner.
St. John's "Wonder Team" will meet on Wednesday, December 8 at 6 pm in McPhail Hall to make 300 sandwiches for local children. Volunteers are needed.
Bring children's socks, infant to kindergarten size starting on the 1st Sunday of Advent, November 28, to help decorate our two Christmas trees. One tree stands in the Narthex (sanctuary entry room) and one by the church office. Presbyterian Women will deliver the socks to the House of Tiny Treasures and Small Steps Nurturing Center.
St. John's church office will be closed Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26, for the Thanksgiving holiday. The staff of St. John's wishes you a blessed and safe Thanksgiving.
During this Thanksgiving season, we remember in prayer those who have recently returned home from the hospital including Mary H, George, Helen, and Frances S. In particular, we remember those who are still in the hospital including Parnell and Lois. May the Lord bring healing to their life.
May the Lord bless you and your family during this Thanksgiving holiday.
Peace of Christ be with you,
Pastor Jon --
