St. John's Epistle for October 27, 2011

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

Considering the decline in recent years among our churches, you may wonder if your are playing on a winning team or not. Our text this Sunday answers that question with a resounding "Yes! We are!" The sermon this Sunday, Victors United, is based on the heavenly vision of the church universal presented in Revelation 7:9-17. We will celebrate All Saints Day this Sunday and remember those who have gone before us this year. We will include a prayer for church members who have died in the past year. Come get a sense of perspective on who we are and whose we are this Sunday. The message has something to do with the World Series. Come hear the connection this Sunday at 10:30 am.

This Sunday is also our 5th Sunday Anointing Service for Healing. Anyone who has a need for healing — whether physical, mental or emotional — is welcome to come forward for prayer after the sermon. When you come forward for prayer you may specify your prayer request to the pastor or just make a general request for healing.

Trunk or Treat is coming this Sunday, October 30, from 4 to 6 pm in St. John's parking lot. The activities will include face painting, pumpkin toss, cookie decorating and much more! Invite your neighbors and friends. It will be fun for all ages! View and print this Trunk or Treat poster and put it up where you work or shop to invite the community to attend.

Our wish list is dwindling due to the generosity of some anonymous donors to whom we are grateful. The current list includes the following items:

Carpet cleaner machine & supplies ($500 + This would better maintain the new carpet in the     sanctuary and in the other buildings.)

Money for four new Cribs for  Nursery ($800 + New Federal mandatory safety standards for infant cribs will require child care facilities and places of public accommodation to have compliant cribs in their facilities.)

If you are able to contribute or want more information about these projects, contact the church office by phone (713-723-6262).

We are also accepting items for the December 4 Holiday Gift Market's Silent Auction. The proceeds will help defray the costs of church members who make overseas mission trips. The travel for such trips is expensive and by supporting our missionaries for a portion of this cost we support Christ's mission around the world. You may donate singing lessons, a fall flower bed, a home-cooked meal, jellies, a quilt, dinner at a local restaurant, art, gift baskets, jewelry, gift cards, electronics, sports memorabilia, entertainment/sporting event tickets, home décor, children's items ... the list of possibilities goes on and on. Thanks for your creative generosity.

Stewardship Dedication Sunday will be on November 13 and will feature a Catered Barbecue Lunch in McPhail Hall after worship.

You are invited to attend Freda Albert's Memorial Service at 11 am this Saturday, October 29, at Clarewood House, 7400 Clarewood Drive, Houston, Texas  77036.
