St. John's Epistle for October 6, 2011

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

This Sunday you are invited to a pot-luck lunch in Fellowship Hall immediately after worship today. Our Presbytery Executive, Mike Cole, will be our guest speaker as we kick off our Fall Stewardship campaign. Remain after worship and enjoy some good food and fellowship in Fellowship Hall.

Thank you to these families who have contributed to our church wish list: Avery (chairs for Scout Room); Brisch (office furniture in Pam's office); Ehrenstrom (couch and love seat in entryway of Building II); MacAdam (TV for the library); Urquhart (quilt in Session Room).

Our current wish list includes the following items:

  • Refurbish sign on West Bellfort  ($1000 + We are hosting the community Thanksgiving service next month and our sign needs sprucing up.)

  • Replacement phone for sanctuary ($200 + This is the phone by the sink across from the choir room which is useful especially for emergency calls.)

  • New outdoor furniture to replace cement pieces around courtyard ($500 + These would replace some of the aged concrete structures currently in the courtyard.)

  • Carpet cleaner machine & supplies ($500 + This would better maintain the new carpet in the sanctuary and in the other buildings.)

  • Money for four new Cribs for Nursery ($800 total: New Federal mandatory safety standards for infant cribs will require child care facilities and places of public accommodation to have compliant cribs in their facilities.)

If you are able to contribute or want more information about these projects, contact the church office by phone (713-723-6262) or email.

One of our church members, Freda Albert, died recently. Our prayers are with her family as they make arrangements for her funeral.

Here is a fine reflection from Kathie Hartzog as we begin our stewardship season.

Once I was reading the scripture where Jesus was asked whether or not it was right to pay taxes to Caesar. He answered give Caesar what is Caesar's and give God what is God's (Matthew 22:15 - 22). In that moment I realized that all that I have, everything in my life, is God's - my time, my thoughts, my strength, my career. That was the day I began offering the first hour of each day to God in Bible study, journaling, and prayer. Our relationship, my and God's, changed that day. God wants all of me, every hour of every day. And, his mercy and grace sustain me all the times I forget. Thank you, God.

You may want to hear Reggie McNeal when he comes to Houston next week on Friday, October 14, 2011 from 12:30 pm to 3 pm at Saint John's Downtown. Reggie is the author of a book called Missional Renaissance which the Session and some committees have studied this year. Here is more information about that.

Peace,
Jon B.
