St. John's Epistle for June 28, 2012

Dear people who persevere in faith despite opposition,

Our proposed single parent family ministry is generating interest in the community. The congregation voted about 130 for and 4 against approving the concept of a single family ministry. The presbytery supports it and we have strong and trustworthy partners. Many people in Houston are not aware that the Presbyterian Children's Home has been serving children across the state of Texas for over 100 years and they have an endowment of over $100 million. We know them well due to our twelve year relationship with them where one of their staff members has an office in our church office. Answers to frequently asked questions about the single parent family ministry are available here.

Vacation Bible School has been great this year! Thank you to all the leaders and participants. It seems like the best one in past five years to me and I appreciate Mary Sterner and all the volunteers who made this happen.

Our prayers are with George; Johnny and Linda for health issues. Also, our prayers are with Lelia Agar and her mother Ernie D since Lelia has been placed under hospice care.

Come to worship this Sunday and hear how the gospel reading from Mark 5:21-43 speaks to our current situation. It is quite remarkable the similarities between the two.

I am going on vacation from July 2-29. During that time Rev. Linda Herron, our Parish Associate, will handle the pastoral and preaching duties. Thanks, Linda. My family and I look forward to visiting with our family and friends in Mississippi and taking a few side trips as well. The next issue of The Epistle will be published on August 2. Until then, keep the faith.

Your walking this faith journey alongside you pastor,
JON BURNHAM

St. John's Epistle for June 21, 2012

Dear faithful, redeemed, people of God,

We've had a lot of publicity during the last week. I was interviewed on TV by Channel 2 and then by Channel 13. We had an article in the Southwest News and the Bellaire News. The coverage is in regard to the Presbyterian Children's Home and Services (PCHAS) single family parent project. We had a great meeting this afternoon between the current partners in this ministry: PCHAS, Houston HomeAid, and St. John's. Our presbytery is the other partner and they are on board with this too. We will develop a Frequently Asked Questions section to put on our church website. It will say what we know and answer the questions people are asking. Please keep this project in prayer as we move forward to meet our church's mission: To glorify God by making disciples and meeting human needs.

St. John's Vacation Bible School (for all ages) starts this Sunday, June 24, and runs each evening through Thursday, June 28! A light meal will be served each evening at 5:30 pm in Fellowship Hall. Activities for all ages are from 6-8 pm. Adults may choose a Bible study with Rev. Linda Herron or card making with Mary Herlitz. The children will study Joseph's Journey in Egypt. David made a cool theme graphic for the children's study. Come and bring your friends and family and neighborhood children.

We welcome Sarah Annalea Gore who was born June 17 to Jill and Trey Gore and grandparents Ken and Virginia Krueger!
There are many opportunities for service on presbytery committees. Click here to see a brochure with the list of opportunities or you may contact Margaret Swarts at mswarts@castleblack.net or phone her at 713-772-2985 for more information.

Our prayers are with Frances as she is still at University Place recovering from surgery and also with George as he recovers from a broken leg that happened yesterday.

Kathie and Libby are going to Uganda in August and invite your participation through Buckets of Hope. Buckets of Hope supports our 2012 mission project at Lulwanda Children's Home orphanage in Uganda. A brightly colored bucket will be delivered to their homes in the village filled with flour, sugar, rice, beans, salt, soap, vaseline, mosquito net, and Bible. Contact Kathie at 832-541-8301 or Libby 713-822-4732 to learn more. All donations must be received by the middle of July. Your gift is tax deductible.

The sermon Sunday is from Mark 4:34-41 and is the story about Jesus calming the angry waves on the Sea of Galilee. May you experience the calming influence of Christ's presence in your life today and throughout this weekend. I hope to see you this Sunday morning at worship and this Sunday evening as we begin Vacation Bible School. May God's blessings be with you and your family in the meantime.

Your glad to be on this faith journey with you pastor,

Note from Ben

Dear Friends and Family -

I'm sending this out to my friends and family to ask for your help. As some of you may know, I recently moved into a solo office and have been working to continue to expand my client base. I'm very excited and grateful to have this opportunity and appreciate all of the support you have shown. And of course, there is now even a greater need to let as many people as possible know about my practice. So, I need to your help to get the below info out to as many potential resources as possible.

Please consider these two great ways you can help:

1. posting the two links below on Facebook, LinkedIn, etc...even Forums you visit...whatever social media you use. (even direct email)

2. share this info via email (or other) with any/everyone you know who works in the medical field, management, police/fireman, clergy, human resources, etc...

Your help is so very much appreciated !

St. John's Pastor Jon interviewed on Channel 13 at 6:30 pm today

The Lord be with you. You may want to watch my interview with Erik Barajas of Channel 13 news about the PCHAS project. He said the interview will air at 6:30 pm today. He seemed positive about it and said he volunteers in a similar project in Kingwood. Let's keep this project in prayer and hope for a good presentation of it on ABC Channel 13 today.

Peace,

Recycle Your "Old" Computer

The computer lab could use an "old" computer. We have only one computer for visitors to use. It is small sized, slow and has Windows XP. It does work OK, just not very fast.

We need one or more computers that you might have in your closet since your recent computer upgrade. Whatever you might have, consider giving us a try so we can construct a useful computer lab for our members and youth.

The parts of the computer we can’t use we will donate to the City of Houston recycling department. How useful! And fun! Please bring your computers to Room 208.
Thanks for thinking about this idea.

As you vacation this summer, and stay at hotels, don’t forget to pick up those little toiletry items for the sailors’ Christmas boxes.

Some other items needed are deodorant, razors, toothpaste & brush, lip balm, small Kleenex, picket combs to name a few. Check out the PW bulletin board (Building 2, across the hall from Room 208) to see the complete list. We already have 30 pairs of heavy work socks and big bars of soap, so the gathering has begun. Thanks in advance.

St. John's Epistle for June 14, 2012

Dear powerful Pentecost people,

Last night we had a great meeting about our forthcoming ministry with Presbyterian Children's Home and Services (PCHAS). We met at the Kolter Elementarys School auditorium with over 200 people from the Meyerland community. The event was an information session sponsored by the Meyerland Association Board of Directors. The meeting was well conducted. After introductory remarks from PCHAS President, Dr. Ed Knight, and me, the rest of the one hour meeting was given to questions from the audience and answers from Ed and me about the Single Parent Family ministry that will include construction of 4 duplexes on our campus. Each questioner was limited to 2 minutes and after each question Dr. Knight or I responded to the question.

Most of the questions were ones we had already heard and answered as a session and congregation. They had to do with how the ministry will be financed, constructed, staffed, and run. The other big concern was about security and of course that is of paramount importance to our congregation and will remain at the top of our agenda on this project. I was not surprised by the opposition but I was encouraged by the support. Several people, some of whom I have never met, spoke in favor of the proposal. Overall, the meeting went very well. Several church members were in attendance if you want to get their impression of how it went. This morning a reporter from Channel 2 showed up at the church and briefly interviewed me about the project. The report may air today at 5 pm on Channel 2 if you want to watch it. I hope it will be balanced and fair.

In other news, you may be happy to hear about a few upcoming youth activities.

Attention St. John’s Youth!

Don’t spend your summer glued to your computers! Instead, make St. John’s Presbyterian Youth Fellowship (PYF) part of your summer adventure and remember friends are welcome.
Below is a list of the necessities needed before you can enjoy the PYF summer outings:

1. Hydrate your body with water (inside and outside).
2. Wear sunscreen (repeat as needed).
3. Wear a hat and sunglasses.
4. Wear breathful comfortable summer clothing.
5. Take pictures. . . and more pictures.
6. Have a cheerful spirit.

These 6 requirements will be really important for our three off-campus outdoor events: Splash day at Small Steps (June 21), Park Walk and Explore (July 8) and our day trip to Galveston (August 4). On these trips we will share Texas summer fun with the students of Small Steps and then with each other.

7. Have a healthy appetite

The 7th hint is necessary for our July 22 and August 19 meetings. We will be indulging our "sweet tooth" as we explore the world of desserts! Will we be baking? Will we be trying new recipes? The only guarantee given is that you’ll be eating! Come and taste! Friends are welcome.

Ship Ahoy

As you vacation this summer, and stay at hotels, don’t forget to pick up those little toiletry items for the sailors’ Christmas boxes.

Some other items needed are deodorant, razors, toothpaste & brush, lip balm, small Kleenex, picket combs to name a few.

Check out the PW bulletin board (Building 2, across the hall from Room 208) to see the complete list. We already have 30 pair of heavy work socks and big bars of soap, so the gathering has begun. Thanks in advance.

St. John's Epistle June 7, 2012

Dear forgiven sinners,

You are invited to the Meyerland Association meeting next Wednesday evening, June 13, at 7:00 pm in the auditorium at the Kolter Elementary School Auditorium. Dr. Ed Knight and I will speak to the community about the Presbyterian Children's Home concept that the congregation approved a few weeks ago. Here is the letter the Meyerland Association sent out to the neighborhood about the meeting. I also want to alert you that a survey team may show up soon to survey property and put out flags. The flags should stay up long enough for the architect to see them. It seems that construction of the units would not begin until early 2013 at the earliest.

We had a good Session meeting last night. Among other things, we:

*Decided to use available reserve funds to replace all four air conditioning units for the sanctuary. The current units are 45 years old and have become more expensive to maintain. The total cost for the new units is $45,000.

*Retained Doug Ustick to represent St. John's in lease negotiations with Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services.

*Elected these elders to represent Session on the Nominating Committee: Kathleen Captain, Kathie Hartzog, and Tom McAdam.

Congratulations to Aubriel Bennett and Danny Bisuali who were married in the sanctuary here last Saturday. Danny is the son of Rose and Dave Muanza. Our best wishes to the couple and their families.

Congratulations to Will Greer who was recognized as the "Caring Person of the Year" during worship last Sunday. This annual award is given by the Caring Committee to a church member who supports other church members such as Will does when he picks up some of our older members and brings them to Sunday services. The Caring Committee did a good job with the brunch in his honor after worship.

Brunch after worship each Sunday during the summer continues this week with the Worship Committee preparing and serving it up in Fellowship Hall after the service.

I addressed this epistle to "forgiven sinners" for that is the theme of the readings this Sunday. We will focus on the gospel reading this Sunday, Mark 3:20-35 in the sermon. I hope to see you this Sunday and then again next Wednesday at Kolter Elementary School at 7:00 pm for the community meeting.

Your surprised by God's amazing grace pastor,
JON BURNHAM

Blood Pressure Screening - Sunday, July 15

Did you know that one in three adults in the United States have high blood pressure and that the risk of having high blood pressure increases with age? Monitoring your blood pressure can prevent further health problems such as heart disease and stroke.

If you are wondering what you blood pressure is, look no further! On Sunday, July 15 a group of medical students will be at St. John’s and will be giving blood pressure readings for FREE.

Please come and get your blood pressure read so that we can have a healthy, happy congregation! Prizes are available for those who participate!

Caring Award Recipient: Will Greer

The Caring Committee is pleased to present the 2012 Caring Person Award to Will Greer.

Will Greer has been a member of St. John’s since the early 90’s and has worked tirelessly upgrading the computer systems, bringing members to church, playing Santa Claus, as well as updating the pictorial directory. He works behind the scenes, not expecting any recognition. "Doing good for nothing," as our former pastor John Shute put it.

He is very enthusiastic and doesn’t stop working on a project until it is done. Both children and adults appreciate his friendliness and willingness to go that extra mile to help others.

Will received a cross lapel pin and a scrapbook. He was very humbled by the award and felt he didn’t deserve it, but graciously accepted it. About 100 people enjoyed a brisket brunch prepared by the caring committee to honor Will.
