September 11th: Houston Remembers




SEPTEMBER 11th: HOUSTON REMEMBERS

 

A weekend of activities and volunteer opportunities will commemorate the 10th anniversary of September 11th in the City of Houston.  Houstonians are encouraged to carry on the legacy of those affected by participating in a weekend of events and community service projects as well as random acts of kindness throughout the greater Houston area. Following is a list of activities and events:

7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Discovery Green

  • Watch the Houston premiere of "REBIRTH," an award-winning documentary that follows the transformation of five people, over the course of seven years, whose lives were forever altered on September 11, 2001. Learn more at www.dignitymemorial.com/911; click on LOCATIONS at the top of the page.  

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2011 

.         First Ladies' Eco Bash on the Bayou

8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Braes Bayou north and south bank trails

  • Join First Lady of Houston Kathy Hubbard and former First Ladies Andrea White and Port Commissioner Elyse Lanier for a community beautification project and planting of approximately 3,000 trees to represent the number of victims who perished on September 11, 2001. .         Everyone Can Be a Lifesaver

3 p.m. until supplies last at Discovery Green

  • Join Houston SERVICE and the American Heart Association for a FREE hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Please note that this is not a certification course and there are limited supplies at this time. This initiative involves training citizens on a potentially lifesaving technique, hands-only CPR, which would impact the entire Houston population by having more residents ready to respond to instances of cardiac arrest. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2011

9/11 Heroes Run

9:03 a.m. at Ellington Airport (Main Gate) with Pre-Event Ceremonies at 8:30 a.m.

  • Join the Travis Manion Foundation to honor the Heroes of September 11th - veterans, first responders and civilians. This is a 5K run and walk for charity with proceeds going to support the Foundation, and specifically in Houston, Assist the Officer.  Learn more at www.911heroesrun.com.

National Moment of Remembrance

Noon

  • Stop and Remember by ceasing all regular activity for one minute as bells and sirens sound.  Take a moment to honor the victims of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Learn more at www.lautenberg.senate.gov/stopandremember.

Houston Grand Opera presents Pieces of 9/11 - Memories from Houston

2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at Rothko Chapel

  • The Houston Grand Opera will perform a selection from Pieces of 9/11 - Memories from Houston by composer Jake Heggie and writer Gene Scheer. Learn more at www.houstongrandopera.org.
