Children’s Book Donations Needed, Deadline July 25: Recently Jennifer Durand and Ernesto Rodriguez’ niece lost her fight against colon cancer. To carry on Luz Angela’s memory and love of teaching, a reading corner will be developed at the UH Downtown campus in Alief. To help build the “Luz’ Reading Corner,” Jennifer is collecting new and “very gently used” children's books. A collection container is located by the church office.

Faith Summit, August 12: Did you know that Houston is ranked among the lowest in the nation in caring for our children? The Faith Summit, kicking off A Week of Prayer for Children and Youth, will provide up-to-date information on the issues and current needs of at-risk children; it will highlight practical ways to respond, and it will mobilize prayer for the children of our city. The Summit will be held at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. To register, visit the Children at Risk website, clicking on August 12 Faith Summit.

Today we welcome to our pulpit: The Reverend Mr. Mike Karim.
He serves with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF) among the International Students and graduate students at Rice University and the University of Houston. Although this might break with tradition, Reverend Karim asks that you call him “Mike.”

2010 Triennium — July 20 - 24

Brendan Ehrenstrom, Austin Gorby, Jon Yingst and Mary Sterner will be traveling to Purdue University in Indiana to participate in the 2010 Triennium.

Triennium happens every three years. Thousands of high schoolers from the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, as well as youth representatives from sibling churches in foreign countries gather together for a week of fun, worship, making friends, Bible study, play, rest and other adventures.

The theme is “For Such a Time as This.” It comes from Esther 4:14. Esther is the story of a faithful young woman who realizes that the situation of her life demands that she act on her faith.

Please pray for St. John’s delegation as well as Presbytery of New Covenant’s delegation as they travel to Triennium and back!

St. John's Memorial Service for Eleanor Brown

The family of Eleanor Brown invites you to join them in St. John's
sanctuary this Thursday, July 15, at 2 pm for a service of witness to
the resurrection and a celebration of Eleanor's life. A reception will
follow in Fellowship Hall. Eleanor and her husband, Travis, joined St.
John's on January 22, 1961. Eleanor died at Holly Hall last Saturday
evening. Travis died about 20 years ago. They were both active and
committed members of St. John's for many years. Eleanor was seen by
many of her church friends at the choir concert on July 4 which she
attended. We give thanks to God for Eleanor's life and pray for her
family as they mourn her death. Rev. Bob Murphy will lead the Memorial
Service this Thursday while Pastor Jon is out of town. Later this
summer, Pastor Jon will lead a committal service for the family of
Eleanor and Travis as both of their cremains are placed in our church
columbarium.

"And I heard a voice from heaven saying,
'Write this: Blessed are the dead who from now on die in the Lord.'
'Yes,' says the Spirit, 'they will rest from their labors,
for their deeds follow them.'" ~Revelation 14:13

Church Apartment Ministry Update

We’re moved into one new apartment, and it is lovely.

Thanks to Esther Bender, Pansy Meyer, Lynda Dyson, Ann Hardy, Elaine DeSouza, and Mark Swindler we were able to get moved and set up in one day. The new tenants, the Grafes, moved in the next day. The only problem is a mouse decided to also move in. I’m beginning to think Bill Grafe was having a nightmare when he saw the mouse. We have 4 traps and two sticky trays down and still haven’t caught the mouse!

We have always been aware the Holy Spirit has been with us on several occasions and once again it happened. On the Friday of the weekend of Alex and the big rainstorm Marie Kutz placed a new tenant in our apartment with the moving-in-day scheduled for Sunday. The patient was in town for treatment but was flying home for a short visit and returning on Sunday. When she and her daughter got to the airport, they discovered their flight was cancelled. They called Marie to see if they could have the apartment Friday. The patient has a feeding tube, but they were short on food, expecting to be at home where the cabinets were stocked. Would you believe there was a whole shelf of Ensure waiting for them in the pantry that someone else had left?

This ministry is a joy to be a part of, and we hope you keep up with your prayers for our tenants. — Sally Shaw

Clerk’s Corner

Your Session met on June 30.

Brad Urquhart and Bill Ehrenstrom attended the Presbytery meeting at Northwoods on April 12. They heard Dr. Laura Mendenhall speak on “Growing the Church Deep and Wide.”

Jo Ann Golden and Kathleen Captain will attend the called meeting of Presbytery on July 18 to receive the report from General Assembly. This will be Kathleen’s first Presbytery meeting, and she is excited to see what is going to happen. Be sure to ask her about the meeting after the 18th. This is an opportunity to see the connectional church in action.

Any person is welcome to attend a presbytery meeting, whether you are the Commissioner or not. You may vote if you are a commissioner designated by your church session, a minister, a Christian educator, and those who have a vote by virtue of their office. You may listen to all discussions, speakers and take part in an always special worship service. As you know, the November Presbytery meeting will be at St. John’s, so in addition to helping facilitate the meeting, stay in the sanctuary and be a part of the PCUSA.

Continuing in our connectedness news, in the last two months Kathie Hartzog’s Africa trip and the Mustard Seed Project received money from New Covenant Presbytery. An invitation was extended to the Presbytery Women’s Spring Gathering in 2011
at St. John’s.

There are several ways to learn what is happening around our Presbytery and with the PCUSA. Each Tuesday you can receive the Tuesday Connect in your e-mail box just by going to the www.pbyofnewcovenant.org and clicking in the lower left corner on Tuesday Connect. You can also see information about the past, present and future presbytery meetings.

St. John's Epistle for July 1, 2010

Dear church members and friends of St. John's,

Come enjoy a free 4th of July concert this Sunday at 4 pm in the
sanctuary. Chapelwood United Methodist Church Chancel Choir will
present "Of Faith and Freedom" by Joseph Martin under the direction of
Tom and Andrea Jaber. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
This is a great opportunity to invite your neighbor or colleague to a
St. John's event. Take advantage of it.

French writer Alexis de Tocqueville, after visiting America in 1831,
said, "I sought for the greatness of the United States in her
commodious harbors, her ample rivers, her fertile fields, and
boundless forests--and it was not there. I sought for it in her rich
mines, her vast world commerce, her public school system, and in her
institutions of higher learning--and it was not there. I looked for it
in her democratic Congress and her matchless Constitution--and it was
not there. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her
pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her
genius and power. America is great because America is good, and if
America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great!" Find
your way to a church sanctuary and worship God on the 4th of July.

Recently, Jennifer Durand's and Ernesto Rodriguez' niece lost her
valiant fight against colon cancer. To carry on Luz Angela's memory
and love of teaching, a reading corner for future teachers and their
young students will be developed at the University of Houston-Downtown
campus in Alief.

To help build the "Luz' Reading Corner", Jennifer is collecting new
and 'very gently used' children's books, especially books about
geography, social studies and science, although Jennifer is accepting
any and all children's books.

A collection container for the books is located next to Vivian's
office. If interested, please write Luz Angela's name and your name
(the name of the donor) on the inside cover of the book.

With the new school year quickly approaching, the deadline for
donating books is July 18th.

Vacation Bible School was a great success. Thank you to Mary Sterner
and everyone who volunteered their time and effort to make this a rich
experience for all participants.

The Session met last night and here are the highlights of that meeting
from our Clerk to Session, Mary Herlitz:

* Mary Hughes went over plans for the November 13 Presbytery
Meeting at St. John's. She reminded us that ALL members would be
needed to help that day.
* Flooring for Building 2 was discussed and a motion for Building
and Grounds to proceed was passed.
* Session was reminded to attend the July 4th Concert at 4:00.
* Dave Nelson, Mary Sterner and Aaron Jacobsen were thanked for a
great VBS.

I am going on vacation this Monday, July 5, and will return on Monday,
August 2. During that time I will not email a weekly Epistle. My adult
"Wired Word" class will continue each Sunday morning at 9 am the
church library with Ann Hardy and Bill Ehrenstrom leading the
discussion. We have some interesting guest preachers who will fill the
pulpit during my absence and I think you will like them. Contact the
church office if you need pastoral care while I am away. I look
forward to returning renewed and ready for further service.

May the Lord bless and keep you as you live into resurrection life in
Christ this summer. In anticipation of our celebration on the Fourth
of July, I will leave you today with this Greek proverb: "A society
grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall
never sit in."

Peace Peace of Christ be with you,
Pastor Jon
